student car buying 5k

Hi,

Im a post grad student looking at buying my first proper car. Have around 5k for car and insurance. I dont have any NCB but do have two years named driver experience and past in 2016 if that helps insurance?

Obviously want something practical-ish and a bit of fun to drive.

Looked at everything from civic type Rs, volvo c30s to older audi TTs.

Opinions on what to look at? thanks in advance

Waste of time speculating about what you can get until you've done some insurance quotes.

Put some options into price comparison websites and see what comes back, I think you are very optimistic with your choices given you have zero no claims, named driver experience won't count assuming it's not one of the policies where named drivers can also build no claims.

You may have a chance with the C30 with a 1.6 engine but you need to spend some time on comparison sites and see what comes back

I’ve been doing a few quotes:

Volvo C30 sport R-design 2litre diesel came back at £800

Civic type R (2008) petrol- £800

Audi TT (2003) 1.8- £750

Clio 197 (2008) 2.0- £850


Pretty consistent prices on the quotes coming back. Happy to pay around that on insurance if it means I’ll keep the car for a few years before I can get something better.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking more money = better.

In that price bracket, I would consider an R53 MCS for a fun drive.
