17 and insurance is £1100 on a 320i? Doesn't sound right to me, insurance is dirt cheap in my area and there's no way anyone would get 1.0 level of insurance prices in a 320i. I paid £4k to insure my ST170 when I was 17 which looking back was ridiculous. 1.6 Focus is probably the best car you'd get that'd be cheap to run and fun to drive. A classic would be a good bet for cheap insurance too, look at 205's, MK2 Fiestas, MK3/4 Escorts etc. Just remember you have to declare everything to your insurer, otherwise when you inevitably crash as most 17 year olds do, you'll be treated as an uninsured driver for driving with undeclared mods. The majority of my mates made that mistake and got banned for it when they either crashed or got pulled.

If maintained well yes, but they are getting old now and do require stuff to be replaced etc, I'm running Stage 2 on my PD150.
