I’ve gotten back into making bread. About a loaf every couple of days. What’s the best way to store the bread?

Wrap it in foil? Zip loc bag? Leave it on the side? Something else?

I have just been leaving it on the side, but it is starting to go a little firm even within half a day.

Are you using commercial yeast or a starter(mother) ?

Commercial yeast and lack of preservatives doesn’t make for a long lasting bread, if you making more than 1 days worth, stick it in the freezer, you could even slice it before freezing, this will speed up the defrosting time, or you could just bung it straight into the toaster from frozen.
Sourdough is the way to go, 4/5 days at room temp on problem.

Honestly, I’m not really sure. This:

We haven’t been doing sourdough - prefer other breads.

Just use it for toast after a day or 2. Commerical bread uses additives and preservatives to help it stay soft, there is little you can do to replicate it at home so make smaller loaves and make them more often biggrin

Use half, freeze half. Take out from freezer as required.

Definitely a ziplock bag for the bread that’s left out.

As above, I eat my on the day I make it and maybe the day after.

After that it's just used for toast.

I keep my bread in the microwave! I think bread sweats if it's sealed to tightly, but likewise you need to cover it somehow. I think.

Wholemeal double bagged in those free vegetable bags from the supermarket. Lasts two or three days. The oil/butter in the mix helps to keep it moist.

Slice it and then freeze it

We use squares of grease proof paper to separate the slices which can be reused for the next loaf. Stops them sticking together

Thanks for the suggestions. It seems a bit overkill to freeze half a loaf to the defrost it to use the next day?

Bake it, slice it, freeze it. Just defrost the slices you need each day. Works really well.
