Hi all

Long one here so feel free to skip if this is too long for you.

2018 I was a very lucky boy and got to build my own house. It’s 3 story and for rough guidance it’s 15m wide by 10m deep. I flood wired the place out with cat6 cable, all pulled back to the garage where I had the BT fttc line installed.

There’s an old Cisco PoE switch in there providing power to 9 IP cams, there’s an NVR on top of that and then I have my firewall and a huawei modem.

Now a few years ago I used to work for Fortinet. So I have a 60D as the firewall and the wireless AP’s are 220b’s. I have two, one under the stairs on the ground floor and one right by the stairs on the middle floor. Coverage is fine with these. Wifi signal is good everywhere.

However, since my wife upgraded to iPhone XR, and I got an 11, the speed of WiFi has been woeful. All other devices perform fine on WiFi except the iPhones! I’m utterly confused. ?!?!

I can be browsing twitter or YouTube and it just won’t load. Drop WiFi on my device and it works straight away. Turn WiFi back on and it’s fine. Then next time rinse and repeat. Even relatively light sites like PH’s won’t load on WiFi until we drop/ reconnect.

So, I’m looking for a solution. The Fortinet kit is quite old now and I’m looking for upgrades. I still have a few contacts there who could get me good discounts, but I want to check out other options first.

I probably could make use of some basic content filtering as I have 2 kids, but this is not a necessity. Key objectives are:-

Enough throughout for FTTC and perhaps future proofed (Fortigate is 300mbps if I remember correctly)

Reliable bloody wifi that’s works with new tech. hehe

Budget. Let’s say up to a grand for the router and 2 AP’s?

Have a look at Unifi mesh kits. They are pretty good.

It may not be what you're after but have a look at the Netgear Orbi would be less that £1k

I'd get some Ubiquiti kit at that budget. As you already have the cabling, getting some APs installed should be no problem. It's about as close as you can get to enterprise level (that I know of) without spending silly money.

https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap/ - plenty of other choices too

Another vote for ubiquiti unifi here, recently upgraded to their kit and it's superb.
