I have a vw tiguan mk2 and due to the free time I have I'm considering changing my brake pads and discs. I'm an amateur when it comes to car maintenance . So is this a job that can be done without too much hassle or should I leave it for the professionals

Depends if you have done any maintenance work before, if not I’d leave them alone as they are a critical component.
If you are confident then watch a few you tube videos to get an idea of what’s involved.

Also depends on your toolkit. The caliper and carrier will need removed which can involve torx/hex bolts. Also disc might have a little grub type screw, sometimes rounded. Sorry, probably not on a tigun- too new.

Do you have access to another car for when you've stripped everything down and realise you don't have a vital tool or component?

OK for the front but the rears will probably need a piston wind back tool.

Doesn't the Tiguan have an electric handbrake ? For the sake of £60 why don't you pay a garage and supply the parts - or just get them to quote. If you don't know what your doing don't mess around with brakes.

You may right in which case VCDS or similar will be needed.

Also don't you need to put vagcom on to change rears?

Fronts are easy if you have skills, Rears need Vagcom to 'reset' electric handbrake

I’ve not tried it on a vag car but on some others you release the parking brake manually, remove the electric motor from the Caliper and wind the piston back manually.
The system resets when it re applies the parking brake next time.
