987 "Front Shock Absorber Clamp"

Evening all.
I'm currently re-building the front shocks on my 2.7 Cayman as the top mounts and bump stops are perished. Just noticed that my shocks don't have the "Clamp" that the S does.

Any idea what this does any why the 2,7 doesn't have it?
Used S shock below.
