Getting me through the crisis
Discussion
My hi-fi is the only thing keeping me sane at the moment! Luckily had my speakers repaired very recently, would be very annoyed if I hadn't got them done in time. Have been listening to all manner of things I wouldnt usually listen to, knowing that theres all the time in the world really opens you up to new stuff

Does Tidal stream in 16/44.1 res? I’ve been using Qobuz last few years.
Qobuz: a pal has this, and handed me his chromebook to pick some songs: the interface looked AWFUL! Does Tidal stream in 16/44.1 res? I’ve been using Qobuz last few years.
So: that was my only exposure to it - can you comment on my initial experience?
(FWIW, we use SONOS, but often use Spotify directly and share with speakers. Understand the quality is not necessarily as good as a lossless service, but then again, my ears aren't perfect, so I can't say I noticed the difference with my pals system!)

Depending on how you’ve set your system up there are loads of different apps out there to control music selection. So: that was my only exposure to it - can you comment on my initial experience?

The basic Qobuz and Tidal players aren’t that good.
I use Lumin and (occasionally) Kazoo and Naim apps on an iPad. All are f.o.c.
Paid for apps which are good include Bubble (android only) and MconnectHD (good for Tidal Masters). Around £5.
Through our Naim and PMC system, but with a very cheap streaming set up, the difference between the best that Spotify and Tidal could offer was quite striking. I wouldn’t be happy making do with Spotify. I’d say that once I get a proper streamer, the difference would be even more obvious. I’m talking first bar of the first song, not sat there straining my ears, trying to hear some sort of difference.

Lots of money obviously but I was amazed at what an ND555 could do with ripped FLACs over a network. Never got to hear it with streamed hi-res unfortunately.
Adding an ND5 XS2 to your system would complete it

I agree, but like most I need to see how the finances are after this lurgy does one.
Changed the main caps in my NAP180 today, £32 from Les at Avondale. 50v items instead of 40v, so hopefully they’ll last til I’m dead and forgotten!
Lots of PMC in this thread, I'm running original FB1s, sadly my sugden IA4 blew an output fuse this morning, so I'm now reduced to using my Cyrus until some new fuses arrive.
Btw Spotify premium running via squeezebox isnt bad at all, I couldn't really tell any difference between that and Tidal, which was a relief as I didn't want to have to explain to my other half how to use Tidal.
Local flac still much better though

@T1547. How do the PMC’s sound while almost in the two chimney alcoves? Do they boom at all at higher volumes? Or do the front ported transmission lines eliminate that?
I ask as my set up has to go in the corner, either side of a 50” tv. Currently have rear ported Monitor Audio Silver stand mounts, but at higher volumes they boom. Tried putting in the bungs but it kills the lower and mid bass.
I am looking at a pair of used GB1+ which I have always wanted.

Not boomy at all. They’re placed approx 30cm from back wall and speaker face protrudes 15cm from chimney breast face.
PMC are great for that reason imo. Tight, fast bass from the transmission line design rather than boom.
Have had MA Silver 2 and Rx6 before and really enjoyed them but like you, also found they could get boomy (exacerbated by being in front of a stud wall when I had them).
