I’m shopping for used sim racing gear. I don’t have anything yet. I was planning to skip the usual entry level stuff and find a good wheel and pedals which will be upgradable / interchangeable in future.

I am watching stuff on ebay, Clubsport wheelbase etc, but building the stuff up piece part is a bit risky with used stuff and I don’t want to get everything together only to find I’ve been sold duff gear.

Considering stuff between £300 - £1,000 and just looking for good stuff at good value.

Before you do that, buy a pc. The sim racing scene is much better on pc I found, console has more kids out to ruin your day.

Also make sure you actually like sim racing, a used logitch wheel of ebay is where I would start, can always sell it again if you decide sim racing is for you.

I’m sure PC is better, but I have an Xbox and I have been playing F1 2019 mostly. That’s why I want compatible hardware first (PC later...)

My laptop is i5 / 8gb so I guess I’m on a hiding to nothing with that.

I have a Logitch g920 wheel and shifter which I have been enjoying. Its nothing fancy but works with console and pc to give you a good starting place.

Usually on ebay around £100 or so but with everyone being locked in I imagine people are using/buying them just now.

Some of the most popular PC games for wheels like Assetto Corsa are old and not very demanding so if your PC has any vaguely modern graphics card it should be fine.

I'd do a Logitech. You'll get your money back and it's good enough for many people. I've found I didn't enjoy certain games with a wheel compared to a pad but loved others. I'd rather not lay out large amounts to discover the game I bought it for didn't grab me.

I get the message. PC ain't happening until after the wheel and pedals.

Honestly pick up a Logitech G920, it will keep you more than entertained for now, then upgrade the wheel once you are fully setup with a PC.

Dunno. I reckon if I bought the Logitech I'd quickly wish that I'd spent more. Sim racing is the substitute for real racing which I currently can't do...

I prefer the feel of thrustmaster stuff to logitech, but i haven't tried the g29/290.
Something like ts-xw would be very good i think.
There is also fanatec elite (probably comparable to ts-xw) and clubsport (step up) but those wheels always looked a bit complex to set up for me.
If you've got up to £1000 you could easily buy new

Same here, no racing and no racing on TV makes geeks go something, something!

However I have the G920, it's good enough.

If you really are set on something more expensive then this is within budget, https://fanatec.com/eu-en/bundles/xbox-one-competi...

Also worth bearing in mind nothing on the Xbox (or PS4) is really that sim like, even PC2 or Assetto Corsa on the Xbox isn't as good as it is on the PC

Don't forget you'll also need something decent to secure the wheel to. The 900 degree (or 2.something turns lock to lock) wheels can't sit in your lap, and you really want a driving position not too unlike from what you'd have in a car too. Pedal positioning isn't such a problem as long as they don't slide, but wheel needs to be secure without help from you, and needs to be located so that you can turn it reasonably quickly.

If you want to buy a racing seat, last time I looked they were £250 new, and decent wheel stands were a bit over £100. A lot of people build their own setups. My first one was a small A-frame step ladder with my feet threaded between two treads and the wheel bolted to the upper one, and that worked well enough for me, so it's doable, but it does need to be done.

Thinking Playseat Challenge? I have an old bucket seat I could use but the foldability of the playseat seems useful

I use the playseat challenge. Adapted it a bit to screw the pedals down (std solution is a velcro strap). Reliable and comfy. Only small issue is that the steering wheel mount has slight up / down play but not a deal breaker. For the money and to have something that folds away its pretty decent

Is something like a Clubsport wheelbase too big, heavy and powerful for a playseat challenge?

I'm looking at new Thrustmaster TX at around £330 now which is where I started before I started fixating on Fanatec...

Thrustmaster TX + playseat with possible future upgrade to Fanatec pedals seems like an avenue?

Challenge looks nice, particularly how it can fold up with the wheels still attached. I have an old Playseat. Can't remember the model but it's an A1GP special, so that might give a clue how old it is.. A couple of hours in it gives me backache... It's never been the most comfortable seat but it's lasted forever and the driving position is good enough.

Mine looks like this, except it has a union flag on the back (as purchased), and it has extra ventilation holes (custom upgrade by A. Cat..)

Have a look at GT Omegas range of wheel stands.

I've got one of their frames w. gearstick stand attachment and it's brilliant. Heavy and bulky so not ideal for packing away at all, but it works wonders, I've got a Sparco bucket seat which just sits on the carpet using side mount rails froma civic or something, totally flat bottom to the rails so doesn't damage carpet.

If you have your own seat, this saves a few quid! Bit bulky though
