Router's a gonner after this virus mess is over
Discussion
With 5 of us in lockdown my router is throwing a proper strop every 30 mins or so.
It's showing red on internet but the separate fttc OpenReach modem has all 3 leds on green.
It's never been good at dishing up the goods if anyone was streaming Youtube guff.
So it's heading for the bin.
It's a Billion 6300 NXL in case anyone knows how to set these up to wring every last drop of juice out of it.
If not, what's the current dog's dangly bits recommendation from all you IT bods out there?
I'd really just like something that can handle 5 HD streamers at once, is safe and doesn't require a cutting edge research genius' knowledge of the innerned to set up.
Not bothered about cost - this is PH after all

Not a Draytek man then?
I don't want to be buying another router for a while so I'm keen to get the best one out there if possible.
If that's it then I'm in.
Unifi Security Gateway Router and an UAP-AC-LITE wireless access point? Both in stock, probably better performance than a single box solution, albeit a little more expensive.
Shop around and see if you can get an edgerouter X or edgerouter lite elsewhere (edgerouter x is about 60 quid, my edgerouter lite at about 100 quid can push nearly a Gb to the wire in a bare bones config, so should handle anything reasonable - it's not coughed once in two years).
I was rebooting my ISP router once every few days for issues, I've literally not touched the ERL or AC lite in more than a year.

Billion are garbage to be fair, and a two box solution would be better.
Ubiquiti stuff is good, but can be a pain in the ass to set up.
We install loads of these and never had any real issues.
Dig deep!

What’s your download speed?
DL 12.5 MBps on wifi, 35.5 on ethernetUL 7.5 for both.
Well the usual answer is a Draytek, but they aren't completely trivial to set up so maybe people are swerving them as a suggestion. I managed to get mine going & they are very flexible but I can't say if it will cope with your load. Just remember that five people streaming might cause any router to struggle but it you don't want to start running in APs then a Draytek would be a good start. The 2862ac version has dual band ac so try & push clients onto the 5GHz band.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I've decided to go big - I'm not getting any younger and SARs III probably isn't that far off, so why wait?
Looking to buy the DrayTek Vigor 2862Lac.
I'm likely to need a lot of help setting it up, but I like playing with toys and I'm a quick learner.
Really can't be bothered with having a router that doesn't perform anymore, so hopefully this baby will do the trick.
Am I doing this right yet?

There's a fair bit of help in the Draytek support & knowledgebase pages put you do need to register with your device serial number. They'll also keep you alerted to any important firmware updates, which has happened a couple of times.

Check the Knowledgebase as well - this is just the routers section:

Latest firmware (3.9.2_BT) for the 2862 introduces in the ability to act as a mesh root.
I have a 2862 and two AP903s in a mesh covering all of a 4-bed house and into the garden. Not the cheapest option by any measure but as I already had the router I decided to stick to Draytek.
Also, do you need the 4G/LTE of the Lac or could you save yourself £200 with the 2862ac?

Do you still have whatever WiFi unit that came with your BT line? The cabled connections on these are fine, and will push max speed all day long. I’d plug in a UniFi AP into one of the cabled connections for about £100, better still, plug in two at a considerable distance from each other. Biggest issue with home routers is that you only have one AP, so inevitably some people will get a s
t connection.
You are paying a lot for failover features in that DrayTek that you probably won’t use.
The only problem with UniFi is that there is all sorts of cool stuff it can do, and you end up willingly paying a fortune for more of it. Mrs Rxe very pleased with it - she can boot the kids off the PlayStation from an app.
