Hi All,

So sadly my 996 was written off by the insurance company due to water damage and I don’t fancy spending £90K plus to replace with a newer model.

I’ve been thinking of a M4 convertible as a replacement, has anyone done the same?

I drive about 2k per year mainly used as a glorified shopping trolly, I do love the sound of the M4 as my Turbo was quiet.

Cheers

Sunil

Not gone from a 996 Turbo to M4 Comp Convertible. But gone from 996 C4S to V12 Aston to McLaren and a few others.

M4 Comp Convertible is a cracking car, rain or shine. Especially shine. Plenty of power, wouldn’t feel slow compared to your Turbo either. In a straight line. Great engine (revs to 7,500rpm, which is lovely) and fast shifting DCT gearbox. Fully loaded with modern kit. Half analogue dashboard is nice, HUD as well...very configurable driving modes to suit the road and your mood/purpose.

Ride is good but on a bumpy B road it feels unsettled, but actually just requires some trust in the car.

Boot is big enough for week long road trips for 3 people, even with roof down.

Had mine for 2 years now from new. Use it all the time. Just so flexible.

Disagree on boot size, it's poor.

Fair enough. I can only share that it was enough for 3 blokes for one week travelling around Europe. But I accept that we all pack differently. smile

I like mine, it’s my daily.

Agree with that the fella says above. I live in a rural area and nail it along terrible B roads all day.

Its a car that takes confidence and learning, but once you are it’s mate you can really enjoy it and hustle it along.

Its still a M4 though, so the rear end will happily come unstuck under full throttle in the dry - so one can’t be clumsy with the right foot and drive it like a hot hatch.

Very practical for what it is. I want a 991 cab, but the M4 offers great value and lot more practicality in comparison.

Insurance - can’t comment, I’m £700 for 32yr old rural postcode.

Boot space. Plenty for a car of this type.

Few pics showing how it can be used for various scenarios!!

Lovely car, I actually drive like an old lady so hopefully will keep the rear end under control. Also I had a 964 C2 before some c**t stole it.

Cheers

My BIL has had a couple of 911s & ultimately ended up in an M4 before recently changing for a brand new M4CP coupe as his everyday car. His first M4 was an approved used car bought at almost 3 yrs old & ran for another 2 yrs until 70k miles whilst it was generally reliable he said he’d not buy one without a full BMW warranty given how complex the systems are on them.

OP, I’d suspect the BMW dealers would be very keen to sell you a car when they re-open. If you can compromise on the noise & you have sufficient budget, have you thought about an I8 coupe (sorry if I’ve mentioned a hybrid inappropriately getmecoat )?

2000 miles a year??

Your cost per mile must be absolutely stratospheric!

I would not be going M4, it's just not special enough for that mileage. I'd want every mile to count at that level.

This is true, as I said above mine is a daily which is absolutely great.

However IMO no M4 should be considered a weekend or super special car. They are nice and certainly very fast - but still just a 3/4series with some fancy bits.

Absolutely no doubt they are lovely cars, I daily drove 20K miles a year in an M6 vert. Currently looking for something to do that kinda mileage here in Dubai and an M car is ticking a lot of boxes again. If I was doing 2K I`d probably not "own" a car.
