My home connection WITHOUT company VPN:
  • 220.3mbps down
  • 20.9mbps up
  • 7ms ping
My home connection WITH company (UK portal) VPN:
  • 1.46mbps down
  • 0.82mbps up
  • 34ms ping
My home connection WITH company (US portal) VPN:
  • 5.00mbps down
  • 2.37mbps up
  • 177ms ping
But the company VPN was never provisioned to have 95% of the 150,000 employees on it at the same time.

Enable split tunneling for your VPN, work traffic only through the VPN, then all other internet access through your own connection.

The VPN is only for the work machine...and only needed for specific parts of the network, so stay off it when I can.

The rest of the traffic is on my own machines, so they're not going anywhere near the VPN.

Not all VPN clients let you do that. IIRC with Cisco AnyConnect it depends on the configuration of the router as to whether split tunneling is allowed.

We use a VPN at home anyway, download circa 45mbps, upload circa 18mbps, ping is always less than 20, lowest I've had is 3.

My wife is now WFH and has been given a company laptop to use and is going through the company portal in Paris. Download is in the region of 0.8mbps, upload is about 0.2mbps ping is about 600....

Its virtually unusable so what she's doing is doing her work locally and then setting it off to upload data overnight, which is fine as she's digitising and archiving stuff. This means that during the day she's only using it for skype, emails etc.

No VPN: 75 down, 18 up

Via Nord VPN with a UK endpoint: 6.1 down, 17 up

It's very unstable as well & both Speedtest.net & Fast.com time out frequently. Not very impressive really.

Without VPN, 123 down and 51 up. (122 and 59 on a second run)
Through PureVPN, 122 down and 59 up

I'd say that's pretty much no effect, and it surprised me that with the VPN through Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt or somewhere in Belgium doesn't seem to make any difference either.

Don't know about my work VPN as I can't run speedtest on my laptop
