So this time of the year I usually start getting my paperwork together for mine and my wives tax return.

Both of us homework some days a week but whilst mortgage rates were so low I never claimed as, correct me if I am wrong, you can claim a pro-rate (based on floor area) tax rebate on your mortgage interest for your "home office". Our home office is dedicated only to be an office, but seeing as some of the periods of home working I was on negative interest (base rate tracker -x% from 2008 - 2017) - or effectively zero due to the cap, there wasn't owt to claim.

Roll on the last two weeks. Kids have taken over the office to home school. I'm in a temporary office in the utility /downstair toilet room - always good when one of your kids rushes past mid video conference "Dad, I need a st, out my way". Wife is in the conservatoire and it is freezing in there.

Electric use has gone from £18/week to £54/week with all the extra electric heaters and computers and devices on charge etc etc.

Can you claim that as a direct cost via HMRC SA? Work, on one of my gigs have said no paying through expenses for this as we're saving a load of money and time not commuting.

Haven't dared look at the gas usage as we've had to up the burn rate on the Aga as we've windows open to keep "air fresh" and the kids seem unable to shut doors. I can hear the gas burning so I know it is more than we'd have used in the winter. I'd ask the butler to read the meter but he is self isolating in the outhouse at the moment.

Is there a clear guide anywhere what can be claimed. I did google and one link which looked like it could be HMRC flagged up as insecure on Avast!

I am spending loads more on electric/ gas but saving more in petrol/ diesel each month. So not really worried as overall, I am saving money working from home and also have an extra five hours a week not commuting too.

Sorry, did not answer your question but financially I am better off.

You can claim either simple method,no calculation, up to £26 a month expense as a PAYE employee https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/workin...

If you are permanently based at home you could do more complex method like this
