I have a 2017 3 series with pro nav, I’m wondering if I can play music via the USB in the centre console?? When I put a USB in there’s no sound at all, I want to get extended Bluetooth coded in at some stage, would that cover playing music via the USB as well??

In my old 2016 GTD it was just a case of plug the USB in & it played straight away.

Does the USB stick show up as a source in the Media screen on the iDrive?

A 2017 3 series should have Bluetooth streaming as standard on business nav, let alone pro nav.

The problem I have found with USB memory sticks is the folder system.
Personally I think you are better just getting a cheap iPod and loading that up, that way you get all of the artwork displayed too and works in the same way as iTunes.
This worked in my 2012 F31 330d and now my F06 640d

FAT32
M4a

I just got a tiny USB ( so it doesn't stick up, and risk me breaking it if I clumsily reach into the console) and copied (cut and paste) over from iTunes.

I get the artwork.

This is the later and cheaper version

I have a 2017 340i with the pro nav, but same set up worked 2017 X1 with standard nav, though I can't recall if I had artwork

Same here, but mine was USB 3 rather than 2. I think my USB stick has larger memory.
I downloaded all my iTunes Store, it took 52% of the cars hard drive (66 plate 335d with pro nav and HK).I imagine others may well have a larger music collection.
I also use the stick in my Sony MAP- S1 HiFi at home

m4a is just the container, it looks like the contents may be lossless which apparently won't work.

I'm not an Apple person so this may explain it a bit better!

This will be SanDisk’s latest spec

https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/d...

It will store whatever file format you give it.

IIRC to work it should be FAT32 and all MP3 files should be placed directly onto the drive - not in a folder.
