How so? They acted within the law, albeit as a last resort because this tit decided to be clever and not engage with them.

Not really.

If we're to have legislation to enforce measures judged necessary to manage the virus, then it'd be rather flawed if you could get around it by just being silent...

I agree, all she had to do was to speak to them.

What should have been done?

Now I'm intrigued to know where she was heading (an 80 mile journey). I might have to make a similar trip to stay with OH - but i wouldn't keep schtum obviously.

Not rocket science to just say where you were going is it?

If you've a good reason to be out and about then you've no worries.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that 563 folk have died TODAY. I'm with plod on this occasion.

Choose to not enforce an utterly ridiculous draconian law?
So basically disregard the enforcement aspect of the main part of the strategy to manage the unprecedented public health risk.

Sounds well thought through.

Strange because usually people are quite supportive of the "attitude test" confused

I'd resign rather than enforce that.
Didn't take long for Godwin's law to appear.

I doubt we'll see eye to eye because your approach appears to be not enforcing the laws designed to help contain the virus.

It's hardly like some fine margin case where some discretion would be more appropriate. Her actions have taken that away (well, except for your 'solution' of her being silent and them doing nothing). The ACC even suggests there'd have been discretion used had she 'engaged'.

Apparently a "ticket offence" was also committed and rail staff reported her to the police for "loitering between platforms" - was she fare dodging?

The law might well be draconian but she has chosen to escalate the situation at a time when these laws are generally perceived as necessary.

There have been instances of excessive zeal but this doesn't appear to be one of them.

She was found guilty of ticket fraud too.

Indeed. There have been instances where the police have been over-zealous. That's not helped by the government being unclear and not legislating as well as they could have. The latest College of Policing guidance should help find the balance between discretion and enforcement and has put an end to things like road blocks to stop cars to check etc.

This is clearly an example where the police aren't left with too much choice. The idea that her being silent somehow magically exempts her from the law is an odd one.

I've also never seen a police state where the police are unarmed.

Prosecuting this lady has made absolutely no difference whatsoever to the spread of the virus.

Its a bad law made in haste & it's disappointing to see so many here happily giving away their freedoms.
She's also a ticket fraudster but that doesn't seem to have been understood by some posters.

She's a crook and was rightly fined

How do you know that?

You can't since you can't measure the prohibitive effect of enforcement.

How many people have read that on the BBC? How many has it made think about the consequences for breaking the law?

I don't think people are 'happy to give away their freedoms', I think they are happy to adhere to unprecedented temporary restrictions to help manage extreme, possibly once in a life time circumstances.
