Tyre Choices + Prices
Discussion
Been reading all the threads with reference to tyre choices, thought that I would post my findings of the options open to me now my tyres need replacing.. Can’t seem to get hold of any bridgestones so had a look on my tyres and came up with the following:-
Front 205/55/15 Goodyear F1’s GS-D2 - £159 pair
Rear 225/50/16 Goodyear F1’s GS-D3 - £174 pair
Or
Front 205/55/15 Dunlop sp Sport 9000 - £133.60 pair
Rear 225/50/16 Dunlop sp Sport 9000 - £175.60 pair
Does this seem about right, I have the Dunlops on my beemer at the moment and have been very pleased with them. Any feedback on either of the above choices would be appreciated or alternatives to these..
Cheers

General consensus is that the Eagle F1s are one of the best tyres around at the moment and are the tyres I'll likely be changing to when mine need doing.
Not had any direct experience of either make though.
I have however, also used Falken FK451's and think they're the nuts. IMHO a serious contender (possibly) to the F1s and also a little cheaper.

There is a new Toyo out (R1 I think) that has a very similar tread to the F1 on the outer side, while the inner section reminds me of some really good Yokohamas that I used to get.
They are getting good reviews and I think TVR might be fitting them as standard on the new cars now.
I'm sure someone on here can give the correct name/number for these Toyo tyres.

That' the D3 though and not the D2.

Difficult isn't it? You can't have the G3s all round so would you be better off with the SP? Why not try it? Prices seem OK.
My solution to this was to go for 16" wheels all round. I managed after months of trying to get 4 brand new standard Chimaera 16" alloys that had been sitting in someones garage and had never been fitted to a car. Wasn't looking for new wheels but just came up lucky.
I now run 225/50 and 205/50 (if memory serves me correctly) Goodyear GS-D3's. I've had the rears on longer than the fronts and so far so good. They do seem to be better that the GS-D2's I had on it before but they were the wrong tyre profile so that may have affected the handling a little.
They look good as well

Whats the differnce between the F1 D2's and D3's as I've just been forced to fit new tyres for my Le Mans trip and could only get D2's, there were no Bridgestones available
.
First impression is that the side wall is like jelly compared to the Bridgestones, as they are new I haven't pushed them yet but I am not looking forward to it tbh
.
Wanted to try Toyo R888's, again I couldn't get them in the time frame
. If I keep the V8S I will possibily change to them later in the year.

You should still be able to get Toyo T1S in those sizes (T1R not available in 15" .
Hmm, think that should be the other way round. i.e You can't get T1S in 15" size as it was released around the time of Tuscans and Tamoras (which all came with a minimum of 16" wheeels IIRC).
I have T1R's on the front of my Chimaera 450 in the very same size 205x55 15"(fitted a couple of months ago to replace SO2's). I have to say the grip is superb in both the wet as well as dry
I have SO2's on the rear still. I am now finding that the rear end is losing grip on a corner more readily as I am now able to push much further before understeer sets in. I think I will be going to T1R's on the rear soon. They do take a good 500 miles of decent driving to scrub in though!

No it was just someone confused. The T1-R (not yet available in all sizes)is the new tyre, just as the SO2PP was the new tyre that replaced the SO2 on the rear of your car. www.toyo.co.uk/index.php?fuseaction=car.t1-s

Nope, T1R not available in 15" (unless you have the only ones!)
(mind you I'm only talking about Z rated tyres - I haven't looked for anything else)

So just to clarify: when you say nope you mean yes. When you say Z do you include W and Y? What choice of tyre do you have that is on the market in the correct size and fulfills your spec?

"Nope" as in "no I did not get it the wrong way round" Do you include W and Y? The last tyre place I spoke to grouped these together with Z.
Not much to choose from is there? I'd like to fit Toyo R888s but I have to use standard road tyres for the TVRCC Sprint series as I have started with SO3s. A real pain

Right....
My tyres are V rated i.e up to about 150mph. Both VR and ZR ratings are being phased out. W and Y ratings will go to approx 167mph and 185 mph respectively. The factor of safety that I think all tyre manufacturers would build in should mean that you will be fine on a V rating.
So assuming that you have either a 4 or 4.3L car (it being a 1994) I would have thought you would be OK on a V rating. I am open to being told I am wrong on this.
I loved the SO2s on my car, but I have to say that I think the T1-R has opened the envelope in terms of all weather grip imho.
Would be interested to know what the Goodyears are like on Chimaeras if anybody has any comments.

Whats important is, what rating of tyre was / is specified by the car manufacturer for that vehicle. Just because the car may not be capable of 150 mph, doesn't mean that it will necessarily have a V rated tyre. There are braking/acceleration/cornering/weight factors to take into account. Z is a bit of an oddity in that it is rated for "over 150mph". Thats probably why its being phased out. I personnally have always fitted Z rated tyres to my last 2 Wedges, even though a V was specified by the manufacturer for these models. I wouldn't feel happy with "only" a V on any Griff/Chim., but that's just me, and I don't know what was specified for these models.

Well suit yourself but I know plenty of people that have 15" T1-Rs. T1-Rs are not available in all tyre sizes nor are they available in all 15" tyre sizes but 15" T1-Rs are available unless they ceased last week.

W and Y are cheap (speed restricted) sub-divisions of Z, which has no speed restriction. I refer to W and Y as separate ratings because I think that it's less confusing but strictly speaking they are Z rated with restrictions.

For the 205/55? No and it's even worse for the 205/60.

Are you sure about the V and Z tyre news? What will replace them? What will 185mph+ (F1, Diablo, 550, Cerb?) cars fit?

In all likelihood yes but it depends upon the use to which you put the car.

I agree with all of that but remember that's what's also important is what is necessary and the legal requirements which happily are the same for once, IMHO. Namely: the tyres must be suitable for the car and the use to which it is being put. Isn't that a beautiful phrase? If only speed limits were the same.

This is a bit pedantic isn't it? Mine is a '96 car and at that time all Chims and Griffs were specified with Z rated tyres. I may have assumed incorrectly that Z rated tyres would also have been specified on earlier Chims. AFAIK that means you should have Z tyres to meet your insurance requirements (if for no other reason). My comment referred to Z rated Toyo T1-Rs not being available. That's all.

I don't think so at all, it's not detail it's the fundamental point 15" T1-Rs are available.

I don't think so but it matters little because your next assumption is incorrect.

Your comment referred to 15" T1-Rs not Z rated. Using the definition that you put forward and was given to you by your garage (the correct definition) they are also Z rated being the W sub division. I don't work for Toyo; buy Goodyears or Dunlops, whatever.
