Evening all, just wanted to ask for your opinion and to check something.

I have a current account with Halifax and a credit card with Virgin. I have a direct debit that leaves from my Halifax current account around the 5th of every month to pay off my credit card and I can pay off other amounts of the Virgin credit card with my Halifax debit card.

My current account debit card is declined on the Virgin website and app when trying to pay an amount of money; it works fine when paying on other websites and there is enough funds in the account to make payments.

I have used another current account debit card on the Virgin credit card app which works OK.

Tried to call the bank, the queue is so long and I figured people might be calling with more desperate issues than mine.

Will this be an issue with my direct debit? As in despite the card issue, would the money still leave my account as the direct debit?

Your debit card and a direct debit are completely different arrangements.

Generally a direct debit is an authority signed by you that allows the originator, in this case your card provider, to claim unspecificed amounts on an agreed date.

Your debit card is a method of making a payment, normally under an umbrella orgainsation such as Visa, at your discretion with the payment normally electronic at the point of sale. You can give a recurring authority to someone who you regularly pay so they can charge amounts as and when. You do not enjoy the same protection doing this that you have with a direct debit.

The direct debit comes with a guaratee. If you dont agree with a payment that is claimed your bank should refund you.

If you are worried that DDs are not being taken, you can ring your credit card contact number and check when the last payment was taken.

Thanks for the replies; I do not want to miss a payment but understand this is done by DD not card.

Based on this, I should be OK for the direct debit as they do not need any card details for that? I could maybe call them tomorrow and see?

I had no end of issues with my virgin credit card when trying to pay down my balance. here is what i found out from then after many frustrated phonecalls:

The virgin website/ app only lets you pay a maximum of £1,200 or £1,500 to your balance from a debit card in one 24hr period

If you pay at or around the maximum allowed every day for a couple of days- they will then freeze your account because it looks like ‘structuring’ or fraud. but not tell you your account is frozen

if you need to pay say £4-6k off your balance (as I did), they will tell you to ‘structure’ your payments every day at the maximum, even though that then freezes your account!!

I was getting so annoyed with them, even when i told them, that what they were telling me to do was causing my account to get blocked, they didn’t have an answer.

I closed my account once I had the balance cleared! thankfully it was 0% interest deal so never got charged interest but very frustrating.

I have a Virgin Credit card as my balance transfer card and manually pay £550 each month while a DD pays off £50. I had a problem paying last month though, I suspect you may be having the same issue.

I could not get the payment to go through in the Chrome browser. The security authorisation kept failing. I also found the same when I tried to pay off my purchases card (M&S) but the issue presented differently, the banking site would just suddenly log out. I though this was a problem with my currrent account but everything seemed fine.

I tried a different browser (Edge) and it worked fine first time for both cards. I suspect a recent chrome update has broken the securecode security my bank uses.

I'm not making huge money transactions but have done a few smaller ones since the weekend so maybe I've 'overdone' it. I always use the app as first nature as it seems easier and I can still pay off the balance by Bank Transfer which works OK.

I can still pay my balance off manually, just concerned about my monthly direct debit not going.
