I’d be interested to get some feedback on what others are doing during this period. For the last few years I’ve tried to drive mine regularly all year round and believe they prefer to be driven often to rarely. I’m trying to abide by the Govts wishes so for the last two weekends I’ve done nothing more than take it out of the garage, driven it only 200m up and down the cul de sac, left it on the drive to warm up thoroughly and then popped it away.

It were going to be in lock down for several months what are others doing? Is it okay to put it on the drive only, let it warm up and then re-garage it as I’m sure I’ve read in historic threads there can be issues with that? It’s on a trickle charger but I just don’t like the idea of it being garaged, undriven for a number of months with seals drying out etc.

Next weeks service with Dom presumably all off too, must call to rearrange that.

Are others more relaxed - what’s the general view?

Thanks

Dave

Personally I am not keen on just starting it to let it warm up for the sake of it.

Why not use it for the weekly essential supermarket run?

The engine doesn't know that the wheels aren't turning, an ECU might but......

No, the engine might not know the wheels are not turning. It will know that it is ticking over on low load. Even if you rev it, it is still no load. Perfect conditions for cylinder liner glazing. Also, you will never get the oil really hot on zero load. Plenty of opportunity for condensation.
Part of the reason for using it as opposed to leaving not started is to warm up / move the brakes / clutch / gearbox / diff etc.

When I am not using a car, I tend to leave it in the garage and not start it at all. However, I do see the benefits of taking it for an occasional run. There are pros and cons to each approach, but to me, leaving it idling on the drive is the worst of both worlds. You are adding an extra cold start (where max engine wear takes place) and a bit of wear and tear without the benefits of going for a decent run.

It is just my opinion, and it may not be the best opinion. Only the OP can decide what works for him.
