I've got no air con at the moment, but I was looking at the a/c pump with the a/c turned on with the engine running and the pump wasn't turning presumably it has a electro magnetic clutch which should engage when the a/c is turned on. Does any one know how to check the clutch is working.

Cheers

Unfortunately you can't... chances are the reason you have no a/c is because you have no gas.

The compressor will only run when there is enough pressure in the system - there is a pressure switch you see.

So, you need to get down to an a/c specialist who will throw a bit of gas into your car with some dye in it. If, after this partial charge, your compressor works, you're in business. Then you just have to see if the dye leaks anywhere (but on a 7 year old car you may just need a re-charge).

If, with pressure back in the system, your compressor doesn't work, then you may have a more expensive problem to deal with.

Remember to use your air con regularly. The compressor and seals need regular lubrication, and the best way to do this is to run your air con for 20 minutes at least once every couple of weeks.

If your seals don't get lubricated they can crack and leak all the gas out. If your compressor doesn't get lubricated it can seize... £££

My local a/c place gave me a partial charge for £30 a few months back, but there were no noticeable leaks after a couple of weeks, so they fully charged for another £90. Job done.

Hope this help, sorry for the long post.

Had my aircon recharged last week and it cost me £50. They did a good job (pressure testing etc). Before I realised it needed re-charging I had a lot of cabin noise from what I thought was the fan but later found out this was the pump "searching" for gas. Most aircon engineers are pretty good at diagnosing faults.Good luck1
