1999 Saab 9-3 2.0 auto - Check gearbox

Had to take my much loved 1999 Saab 9-3 auto (non Turbo) for errands today (necessary journey) and on my way home it flashed up 'Check Gearbox'. Well I looked down and yes the gearbox was still there and functioning appropriately. The car has just turned 80k miles and is going well. Is it the gearbox oil level or could there be something must more sinister afoot?

The first thing I would do is change the gearbox oil unless you know it has been done recently
