Since o have had the aptop , the poor old PCis stiing upstairs neglected, nd only used for scanning/prinitng

Thought i would get the free upgrade and it stops halfway through telling me that the CPU doenst have the ooomph to take Win 10 and closes down

Now years ago When i got the PC and you could buy lovely PC mags with lots of ads you could ring the suppliers up and get some good Sales help. It seems to be all on ghe net

Could a PC guru point me in the right direction to get a cheepo ( but not Toooo cheepo) CPU that will be happy with Win 10, As mentioned used mainly for priniting an scanning so no streaming/ music downloads/gaming Although i still want to get A Teain sim and a flight sim to satify the child within!

You can download CPU-Z from here

https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/cpu-z_1.91-e...

Or you canlook on the motherboard to see the make and model upload pics of any text on the board if your not sure

Whatever it is it must be ancient. I have a netbook, built in 2010, Acer Aspire One with Intel Atom N270 that is running Windows 10 version 2004 happily.

What do you mean by CPU? Most of understand that to be the main processing chip that sits on the motherboard but presumably you're talking about the whole desktop computer?

I will fire the thing up again and note what the message i get.Hopefully that should narrow it down. I do know the the MB and the processing chip are VERY old!!! at least 10-12yrs minimum

Just buy a new computer
Or motherboard processor and ram - which is like buying a computer
I suspect your processor is an old single core type thing

If you dont want to buy a new one just buy a recent one something with an i5 processor and at least 4gb of ram
Your just wasting your time otherwise though I know some bright spark will be along to tell me I am wrong and that a 12 year old mobo and processor can still cut it./ Especially if you install Linux orgasmic version 22

ditto or buy a Raspberry Pi,

does the motherboard support a more recent processor?, is the memory enough to support new OS?, can you expand the memory? Is the cooling/case good enough?, blah blah. There are too many interlinked and interdependent parts. You may be lucky and it will just be a matter of changing CPU, I would guess you wont be,

just buy a new/second hand PC.

Having spent the last hour or so running the upgrade which appeared to be running smoothly , at the last moment it kicks me in the nuts ans tells me that

Cannot run windows 10

PC processor does not support a critical feature (prefectW)

Nothing else!!!

Honestly I wouldn't bother trying to upgrade a 10-12 year old machine. You'll save so much time and hassle in the long run just buying something used or refurbed for £100-150 or so that would run rings around whatever you managed to upgrade the old one to.

I've actually got a couple of PCs I've just wiped and reinstalled sat on the floor the other side of the living room at the moment which would be exactly the sort of thing I mean (and both took their Win10 upgrades!).

Gents

A big thanks for all your help .

Will just use it as a print/scan standalone for the moment. and have agood look around for a suitable Motherboard and CPU to upgrade to without breaking the bank. Not needed for games (although a decent flight sim and train sim may be considered later on)
No downloading films or streaming Dont i sound like a sad old sod!!) just basic net access

If you want to throw some suggestions please do

For something so basic - any old refurbished office pc will do ( Amazon) and will come with an activated copy of win 10.

Honestly OP, do this. It'll be more cost effective in the long run, easier and much faster. Don't waste your time with trying to put lipstick on a pig!

For basic office type work I'm a fan of Dell PCs like the 7010 model in Small Form Factor size. They aren't the latest & greatest but they are solid little machines that are more than capable of doing 95% of the work anyone needs to do. They won't take massive graphics cards but that isn't an issue for you. I have one & it will happily runs AutoCad, Excel, Outlook, & Firefox all at the same time.

There are hundreds of them for sale on ebay via refurbishers who have a number of listings where you can configure processor, RAM & HDD/SSD. I'd suggest you look for an i5 (type starting with at least a '3') or an i7 (more expensive though), 8GB RAM (more is nice but again more expensive) & an SSD (240Gb).

This is the current ebay 7010 search list:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=dell+optipl...

I spotted this one which, although not quite what I suggest above, seems as if it might be very good buy:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-Optiplex-7010-SFF-...

It's an i5 with 4Gb of RAM & a 500GB HDD but it only costs £73 plus £10 shipping. You could easily put another 4GB of RAM in & maybe upgrade to an SSD if you wanted to. I'd really suggest giving this one consideration as it seems very well priced.

From the many refurbishers here are a couple of suggestions:

£198 gets you an i5 with 8GB RAM & a 240GB SSD.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-Optiplex-7010-SFF-...

This one has a later generation i5 processor: £240 gets you an i5 with 8GB RAM & a 240GB SSD:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DELL-Optiplex-7020-9020...

There are a lot of alternatives in this search alone for you to look through. Of course you don't get the comfort of a 12 month warranty but in my view the cost saving is worth the risk.

Ask if there's anything further you need to know.

Mr P

Thank you that is fantastic info.

You have given me something to do for the next few weeks!!! ( apart from drawing a complete new tender top for my loco and arranging bits and pieces to build a 1/96 WW2 cruiser!!!)

just one question. Would i be able to install my Seagate HDD 2TB drive into the casing?. It has all my video and digital pics on it ( which are also backed up on CD/DVD)?
.
God knows how many drinks i owe you!

Regards
