Wooshing in ears
Discussion
Hi
Just started about a week ago a wooshing noise in both ears. It is in time with my heart beat.
I have been mountain biking every day, around 6-10 miles a time, but I usually do that every other day anyway.
Is the wooshing likely to be anything to be concerned at? Have a bp monitor and it read in the normal range, heart rate was low at 59 though.
A google says tinnitus but I've only ever had high pitched noises never wooshing /wind noises.
Thanks

Thanks all.
Seems to be worse in the right ear today. Was keeping me awake last night. I can hear it now.
Yes stress and anxiety definitely higher as with a lot of people I imagine so it's probably down to that.
Sympathies to anyone who has this constantly.
Parrots. Occasionally I do hear "who's a pretty boy then" as I drift off to sleep but I've always had that lol.
Cheers

Sounds like pulsile tinnitus. I have the same thing almost constantly.
I think I read it can be caused by several things such as a build up of wax, or by something causing a blood vessel to change position in your ear canal.
Pulsatile tinnitus, I believe. MrsC has it. She's seen several specialists, the only cure offered was to tie off the artery in the offending side I think I read it can be caused by several things such as a build up of wax, or by something causing a blood vessel to change position in your ear canal.
which sounds like an Extremely Bad Idea.It drives her mad sometimes, she has actually said at times she genuinely couldn't live with it if it were permanent.
She says that taking water pills helps (eg Aquaban) - may be worth a try.

Does it come on when she's more stressed? If so, I'd address that rather than have any arteries tied off!

I've had that for a number of years now. It started that I could only hear it at night in bed and as you say, it was in time with my pulse. It got worse so that I could hear it all the time and I went to the doctors and they said they could not really find a reason. My doctor asked me if it bothered me and my reply was that it didn't really. On that reply she pretty much said well in that case I'd not let it worry you then.Just started about a week ago a wooshing noise in both ears. It is in time with my heart beat.

So as I say, it does not bother me really.
I did do a lot of using Doctor Google at the time and the best explanation I found, as others have said above, is that it's a blood vessel that is too close to your inner ear/ear drum and so you hear the blood whoosing in time with your pulse.
From my own experience I'd not be concerned about it.
I've got tinnitus but after a head scan it was identified as a blood vessel looped in the ear area which was causing the issue. It's proper ringing but I can sometimes hear the whoosh as the OP describes.
The specialist said it might be cured by an operation which meant removing part of the skull by my ear to get to it - that ain't going to happen! My hearing isn't amazing either so I reckon the issue would only half go away if they opened me up.

I had this last year. It was due to earwax build up. The lovely nurse at my GP surgery removed it. Now that was satisfying, the nurse was proud as punch as she showed me the lump of ear wax which looked like a dog end!
Superhero hearing ensued and no whooshing.
That's always worth a try as well. I did have some wax built up so I used Otex and that stuff is great. Pop it in, turn your head on it's side and then you feel the stuff enter your inner ear and then it starts to fizz as it reacts with the wax. Oddly that noise is very satisfying as you know it must be working !Superhero hearing ensued and no whooshing.
And as others have said, olive oil in your lug is a good idea, only don't put cotton wool in as well otherwise it draws the oil back out before it's had chance to work.

As my post above. Amazing the difference ain't it! Superhero hearing ensued and no whooshing.
Just in case anybody else suffers with this and these solutions have not helped, i thought i would try also.
I have the same thing time to time but it is not in time with my heart beat. After exhausting a few solutions i asked my GP who just said wax, it was not so i went back. Saw another GP who seems to have hit the nail on the head. They asked if i'd had a few ear infections in my life and if i'd had a cold recently, both answers were yes.
It seems for me at least, that the ear infections have caused a build up of fluid in my eustachian tube which has damaged the tubes. The middle. Normally, i don't have any issue with it but if i am stressed, or if i have had a cold (sinuous issue) then it comes back. What clears it is simple decongestants. I couldn't believe how simple it is and how that diagnosis was spot on.
Hopefully it will help somebody at least as it is hell trying to sleep with the noise.
