Scan & 3D Print Trim Parts?
Discussion
Hi
There are a number of plastic/rubber trim parts that are no longer available and sell for a fortune when they come up for sale when a car is broken for spares
How difficult/expensive is it to get parts scanned and 3D printed - can anyone point me in the direction of a firm that provide the service?
Thank you

I remember a thread a while back about a BMW M1, where the owner had a couple of small engine bay covers scanned and printed, I seem to recall it running into a couple of thousand to get them scanned and printed and these were not complicated parts.
But i'm with the OP in principle it should not be that difficult, maybe there is a business here?

Some time ago there was a programme on Jay Leno making 3D parts for a pre WW1 car. For me, it is great white hope of the future of spares for classics, and it is to be noted that having your teeth crowned has reduced by 50% here in France due to the 3d printers. Also, you go in the morning, and the tooth is fitted in the afternoon. No more waiting a few weeks.
Another route open to reproduce, say small plastic parts, is resin casting. Assuming you have an original part to use in creating the silicone mould, the technique is quite easy and very cheap. I have used this to replicate a door lock button cover on my present Lamborghini Jarama restoration with excellent results.

I've had a couple of badges and wheel caps 3d printed for my Lancer. 4 x 5cm wheel centre caps cost me £5 delivered, the bade was £4 delivered. Not horrifically expensive and as both are NLA, it did save me a lot of hassle.
worth it if you have the original parts or dimensions and need them in a hurry.

Who did them please? Would you recommend them?worth it if you have the original parts or dimensions and need them in a hurry.
I spotted a post on a Porsche club on Facebook a few weeks ago. Someone was knocking out 3d printed Porsche bonnet badges. He was using a Matt black material that looked really good. The face of a Porsche badge if you have ever looked is quite an intricate design so I was impressed how well it turned out. Definitely a business there if someone had access to the programming.

If it’s not a big part, and you can scan it in and send it on - I’ll have a go at printing one out for you.
Making it look OK to use on the car is another matter....

Hi Andy what are the details of the resin you used. My fiat dino restoration needs an almost identical part as yours, plus some other bits.
