My motherboard fan has become noisy shortly after start up or after sleep, the noise only lasts for about a minute.

I ordered a new one off eBay, but when it arrived the info on the label differs from the seller's description and my original.

The close-up is of the replacement

The wider shot is my original

The seller claims that the replacement will work.

What does the PH collective think?

Yes as above - but I would have taken the opportunity to add a bit of a beefier cooling solution ( e.g. Deep cool) - the bigger the fan the slower it spins the lower the noise. Of course your case may not have the space but there is always a solution to that

Note if you do replace the whole cooler and not just the fan remember to re-paste the CPU (might be a good idea anyway) .

I know nothing about PCs, I thought that I was brave just removing the side biggrin.

When you talk about the whole cooler, do you mean this?
I smudged the grey paste taking the unit out of its packing.

Are the units difficult to get out?

Intel standard coolers (metal bit connected to the fan) should be fairly easy - have a watch of this and reverse the process to get the cooling assembly off. Whilst it would have been better not to smear the pre-applied paste there is still plenty on the cooler for decent coverage.

I would assume that E97379-001 is an earlier revision, and the -003 is a newer revision. It's fine, I'm sure.
