Help with 3.0 litre capri
Discussion
HI a few years ago my 3 litre capri was making a few rattling noises from around the engine bay
car has been laid up for twio years after a bit of tinkering with the carbs and a jump start managed to get her fired up , can anyone identify the graunching noises , happens after start up
its almost like the starter motor is engaging ?
much appreciated any advise .

Take the fan belt off & see if you still get the noise.
Don't run it for long!
ETA What happens if you press the clutch pedal?
If it's an auto is this the noise you had before - I wonder if the flex plate is damaged?
right fan belt off and fired up no noise...its a manual and no issues with the gears Don't run it for long!

You say the fan has play ?
If it is all tightened up properly then the bearing on the water pump is shagged. They tend to make noise on start up until some heat runs through then they seem to balance themselves and go quiet.
Do not be fooled , get the pump out and replaced before it wrecks anything else .
Other grumbling from the front could be the timing gears beginning to fail , capri forums will offer the best cure for this . I seem to recall that uprated gears are the ultimate cure but they are not very cheap .

Sounds a lot better.
I agree the fan on the front of the alternator sounds to be catching on something, probably best to remove & see if there are any obvious marks on it and the front of the alternator.
The fan shouldn't be wobbling about like that or making the noise.
When you turn it it looks as though the pump pulley is running true but the fan is loose.
Quick google suggests there is a viscous coupling https://www.tickover.co.uk/shop/contents/en-uk/d35...
I think yours is completely knackered & the main source of the graunching.
A worry is that if it lets go completely when running it could throw the fan into the rad & take the rad with it.

thanks , i just googled tickover , i'll take both the alternator and viscous fan off tomorrow and check to see if it needs replacing , there was a spare alternator that came with the car , this one looks pretty new ? but ill check it out I agree the fan on the front of the alternator sounds to be catching on something, probably best to remove & see if there are any obvious marks on it and the front of the alternator.

From your vids, I think your car has power steering and if so, that belt would have had to come off first.
The noise sounds like the power steering idler bearing being seized. Worth seeing if you can spin the idler by hand with the belt off.
thanks ill check this as well The noise sounds like the power steering idler bearing being seized. Worth seeing if you can spin the idler by hand with the belt off.

The more googling I do the more I think the water pump is the item below the alternator & TBH I'm not sure what the pulley with the loose fan actually drives or is mounted on.*
I had an Essex engine Scimitar but it was a long time ago & I don't have any manuals.
ETA *An idler of some sort in the front of the timing cover? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Essex-V6-3-0-FRONT...

With all belts connected , alternator pulley connected to water pump & viscous fan beltI had an Essex engine Scimitar but it was a long time ago & I don't have any manuals.
