CV19. Could Britain have stopped this dead.
Discussion
Oh no! Not another virus thread I hear you say.
I'd like this to be a discussion about an alternative history or timeline. A genre of Sci Fi that I'm a great fan of, hear me out.
Consider our leaders are rather more astute than the fools we currently have, and they saw this coming from last year.
The news was bad, I work in news and was already privy to the appalling situation in China, so I'm sure they were better informed.
Britain is an island, this very fact has kept invaders out for centuries until this microscopic one succeeded.
What would have been the economic consequences of shutting all airports and harbours back in early January, testing every Briton repatriated and searching out every contact when the infection rate was low?
I know hindsight is a marvelous thing and weighing up the cost to the country of doing such a thing at the beginning of the year compared to the devastation done to business and wages now, is a luxury.
But wouldn't we now be the only single working, virus free powerhouse in the West, if not the World, if only we had done what the Brexiteers wanted, and turned the UK into a fortress cut off from the rest of the world?
Be great if some of the finance chaps would discuss this, as obviously I am unsure of what I'm talking about, just an idea that came to me whilst trying to social distance at work yesterday.
Thanks for indulging. Ta.

Depends how you create most of your wealth/product. New Zealand will probably be the first country that has the same lifestyle to us which eradicated the virus.
But then what?, none of the population is immune and seeing as they rely on tourism I’m not sure what they going to do. Who will be going on holiday there if the first 2 weeks have to be spent in quarantine.
What’s the UK main source of GDP I’m not sure we would be in a better position than we are now. Demand has dropped for everything except food throughout the world so we could carry on production of stuff but who’s going to buy it?.

Keep them coming
My thought, as rubbish as it may be, is that all the financial services would be fully up and running. Doesn't most of the world rely on that?
Food is a very good point. It would take a long time to get up to speed to grow everything our population needs. We have a big population.
We can still import, but stringent procedures on quarantine and/or making sure products and produce are cleaned. Like we are supposed to be doing currently with our groceries.

sadly this virus started with 1 person, and until we become immune to it or have a vaccine to beat it , things are going to stay the way they are at the moment. After the lockdowns if 1 person somewhere in the world still has this virus within 3 months it will have spread all around again

Britain imports a lot of food so unless the farmers can fill the gap with very little notice, then we would be quite hungry in our “fortress”.
and everything else.We manufacture jack s
t - we struggle to cobble together face masks - one of the early concerns of China's shut down (when we thought the virus wouldn't affect us) was the stop in supply of manufactured goods affecting UK industry!croyde said:

Except we've a long history of invaders, big and small. Grey squirrel, Japanese knot weed, mink, crayfish, parakeets, even rabbits.Britain is an island, this very fact has kept invaders out for centuries until this microscopic one succeeded.

We've never been an isolationist nation.

Completely wrong. There are countless viruses all over the world, all of the time. Does everyone catch them all? Of course not.
No it’s not wrong it’s completely right. This virus is way more easily spread than standard flu.
It probably started with 1 person and will come back again. If you could eradicate it by every person in the world staying locked down for a month and it fizzled out, there is no guarantee that it is not rife in all the bat population and could jump again over to humans.
But that’s irrelevant anyway as we are not able to quarantine every person in the world anyway.

My job is funnelling money around the world, we have been deemed an essential business, yet I have already noticed a distinct drop in the volume of work, as businesses round the world are contracting, so is their need for funding/need to repatriate profits.
