Carpet Fitting
Discussion
So I've finally got arouns to fitting the two new carpet sections, to the rear of the doors. They were poor when I bought the car, so D&C Trim supplied the new sections for a very reasonable price. (Don't ask, I can't remember how much now, it was about 6 months ago.) I've started with the passenger side.
The first task yesterday was removing the original panel. I don't want to remove the hood hoop with all that goes with that so the removal of the pivot bolt and a single pop rivet at the top of the door trim was all that was required. The new piece will be tucked up and glued behind the remining carpet section under the hood. The original factory glue was very reluctant to let go (industrial quality, where can I get some?) at the top edge as you can see from the photo below. (I cut around the interior light wiring and will do same with the new section) The whole thing took about 40 mins, easing a little at a time.

As can be seen the new section will require some trimming before fitting. My question is this though. The leading edge, where the carpet folds back on itself and tucks under the rubber door seal for around three quarters of the edge. The top quarter however, (where my finger is pointing at the white backing, the original reason for replacing this section) isn't doubled back.

On writing this, I think I may have answered my own question...
Question was to be, should it all be doubled, folded back on itself and slotted under the door seal? The rear of the lower section has a fibreglass panel glued to it, which covers the access hole to the door mechanism and all manner of wiring - including the yellow fuel pump wires. The velcro part along the lower section further strengthens my thoughts.

So am I right in thinking that only the top (single) part tucks under the door seal trim and the lower folded part simply velcros at the bottom, to allow flappy access to the wires and solenoid behind? Makes sense. Final pic shows car back in garage with hood pivot bolt reinstalled. The top of the rubber seal is still 'free' as the pop rivett was drilled out. 3.2mm x 16mm pop rivetts on order for replacement. (Not visible as it's behind the hood hoop stay.) I need 2x rivetts. Minimum number available, 40!

Apologies, pics 2 and 4 are on their sides and pic 3 is upside down! No matter what I do... no rotatey.

Not much interest in this thread - none in fact!
No matter, I think I've figured it out. Simpler request this time for a picture of your door seal on the rear edge, where it interfaces with the carpet. Just open the door, point the camera down and voila. Many thanks.
Plus... any recommendations for best carpet adhesive please. Greatly appreciated.

Sorry can't help with a pic of your chosen area ,but the best and only adhesive is EvoStik. ( From my own experience) just make sure you use in WELL ventilated area and make sure you place each piece in the right place first time . Good luck.

In your third picture the carpet is wrapped and glued to the GF stiffener. When fitted that edge aligns with the back edge of the door seal. Above that point the carpet edge is glued to the edge of the door opening and the door seal is pushed over it.
Does that answer your question?
Done a few of these now.

Below is what I have, although it does not look original as the upper and lowers are different carpet types and colour, but basically the upper closes over the lower with Velcro so you can remove it for access to the electrics behind, but it doesn’t look a perfect job to me, maybe someone will have a photo from an original or more professional fitment

That's just what I wanted to see, thanks Paul.Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
