I have the dubious distinction of being the Wedge owner who managed to destroy his engine within 1 hour of owning the car. (the previous owner assured me the uprated cooling system was full of water and that I shouldn't worry if the gauge was overreading "'cos it's always done that"
65 miles up the dual carriageway it started sounding like it was pinking. I pulled in and nearly BBQ'd myself when I opened the bonnet. The engine was a goner. Cooked oil, flattened cam, run out big ends, wobbly mains etc etc.
You'll need to dismantle it to see what can be saved and assess it from there. All the injection gear on mine was ok, and the pistons hadn't actually siezed. The rods were ok but I didn't re-use them in case the heat treatment was buggered.
Is your's a MKII? If so, put a bigger engine in. If not, lookout for a cheapish range rover on ebay and go for a listen to the motor.
If all else fails I have a ford cosworth v6 lying around....

Put a 4 or 4.6 litre in I reckon. Might as well use the opportunity, especially if your shocks/brakes are already upgraded.
Economically this has to be your best option unless the damage is very slight. A second hand Disco/RR engine will have plenty of torque and is a good starting point.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much. If you're happy with a standard 3.5 there are any number on Ebay; even if you have to have a rebore and crank grind you can build yourself an almost-new motor for a few hundred quid.

Sorry to hear about your engine, bit of a bummer to say the least but I have rebuilt a couple V8s and they are wonderful and simple engines (Later seems fitting for me
) and if you are handy with spanners it is the way to go, parts always came from RPi who are always most helpful. Plus when you first start it up after a rebuild and overcome that first cold sweat as you think did you put all the fluids in etc etc it is immensely satisfying.
With regards to ebay there are various types of units with different compression ratios between landrover V8s and others but not sure of how much difference and net effect but sure some other wedgers will have the answers
Best of luck
Hi Nik,
Have you got an engine for your wedge yet? I am in Leeds West Yorks and could build an engine to your deired spec. if you let me know what you need and what your budget is and what you need from standard upwards. I am in the TVR club and have built engines for other members before on a budget basis. Do you know how bad your own engine is and what is slavageable? Let me know if you're interested and we'll take it from there, further to that I am possibly going to be coming down to the Preston area early July, regards, Mr-Scott.
