The Rare Whiskey Investment Thread
Discussion
Not sure if this is the correct section but in the spirit (pun not intended lol) of the cheap lease deals thread I think we need a thread on Whiskey Bargains now that Whiskey has become a big investment vehicle.
The idea is to post your whiskey deals below so that the PH collective can benefit. If you don't want to invest then buy and enjoy the cheap deals!
I have today found the following.
Nikka Taketsuru 17 for £215!
https://whiskycollectables.co.uk/product/nikka-tak...
These usually retail on upwards of £600!
https://www.houseofmalt.co.uk/product/nikka-takets...
The other one I found was Hibiki 17 years which Harvey Nicks have up for £350!
https://www.harveynichols.com/brand/house-of-sunto...
These usually retail for well over £550!

A chap I know buys 2 bottles, one to invest and the other to drink!

This is what I usually do nothing too ££. Bought a few of those Hibikis 12 /17 when news came out they were going to be discontinued a few yrs back. Have a few of the Ardbeg committee releases over the yrs etc. Not sure investment is the real reason more one to drink now one to drink later down the line TX.

I've been doing similar for a while, and have one bottle I pretty much forgot about now worth at least 10x what I paid for it..TX.
I started buying bottles of Imperial a few years ago when there was still stock selling for £55-70, as prices for whisky from a silent distillery are only going to go one way - I have one or two open, plus maybe ten more.
The ship hasn't quite sailed there, as are still some other bottlings to be had around £200 if you shop around, but I've seen one of the earlier bottles I've bought listed for between £300-400, although one was with a shop known to ramp up prices.
If you fancy a bottle of imperial to drink it can still be picked up for a reasonable price.

I'd certainly be nervous about buying whisky as an investment at the moment with the forthcoming global recession and massive recent increase in production. The recent releases for collectors/flippers (Folio 5, Supernova, etc) aren't making anywhere near what they used to and even for closed distilleries is it still realistic for them to even double in value?

I have this:

No idea if it will ever be worth more than the £250 I paid. Picked it up as a relative was adamant that the previous four releases shot up in value very quickly, and they raffle them off given low supply. I'm not so sure - everyone I know that went in for one got one. If it doesn't I'll just drink it in a few years;-)

They made a lot more of Folio 5 than the others, hence everyone getting them and a low price.
It's why I basically don't buy for investment but buy to drink. But if a whisky I have goes crazy then I might sell it and buy other bottles which I will enjoy just as much. So reduces cost of drinking. Unless you're only an investor then you have to ask the question; will I be happy drinking this if the bottom falls out of the market?

I suspected that was right, as was surprised everyone got it. My mum and a few of her friends each have Folio 4 which has apparently went up in value. Any idea if the Folio 5 whisky is actually any good?
The Balblair 1991 is a very good whisky and was excellent value when it was released at £120. It's still available at £160 and compared to it's replacement Balblair 25 at £499 there might be some room for growth. I've personally got a couple of bottles, mainly to drink, but I'd certainly sell one if it got close in price to what they're trying to get for the 25.The more likely option is that they've completely misjudged the price of the 25 with the re-brand.

I have a bottle of Arran Gordon's Cask- only 197 ever existed, only 50 stayed in UK with the rest going to Japan.
I could be persuaded to part with it for a decent offer.
One of these ? -I could be persuaded to part with it for a decent offer.
