2005 Ford Fiesta - 1.4 petrol engine advice
Discussion
Hi,
We’ve purchased a 2005 Ford Fiest Auto for my sister to learn in. (She’s doing auto only)
The car is spot on, senior lady owner for the last 10 years, full Ford history and in good condition with only 65,000 on the clock.
Just after some advice the engine sounds very tappetety (if that’s the correct word) like someone has a hand full of tea spoons banging on a pan. It’s not loud when ticking over but under load it sounds very tricky/tappy.
Done some research and most people saying maybe the tappets. I’m going to take it to the garage but just wondered if anyone else has had this car/engine with similar problems and if this is a serious issue?
Sister is (when lockdown is over) learning still so the car doesn’t get used much but it’s been recently serviced and oil changed and no difference.
The dealer we purchased it from have given us 6 months extended warranty so if it’s serious I may take it back for them to further investigate. (When we purchased the car it wasn’t as loud but it’s got louder (I think) since driving it for the past couple of months.
Thanks

If it has hydraulic tappets, they can fail, and would make a noise similar to conventional tappets that are out of adjustment.
They can also get sludged up and not perform correctly, and there are products on the market that will flush them out. As mentioned though, it should really be given back to the Dealer to sort out, when possible.

We have a 56 1.4 petrol with similar mileage. The engine is very smooth and quiet. We’ve purchased a 2005 Ford Fiest Auto for my sister to learn in. (She’s doing auto only)

I would check that the sparkplugs are seated correctly and working properly, without any cracks in the insulators etc.
