Hi there. Just picked myself up a 2014 228i M Sport. So far, all good, really happy to be back with some RWD action after four years with a very nice but slightly fluffy Audi TT 2.0 TFSI.

Initial thoughts are that it could probably do with a bit more power and a bit more noise. I've heard about people fitting M Performance exhausts to 228s but it seems like a lot of effort. Was wondering if anyone had any slightly less labour intensive (but legal) options for getting just a bit more noise. I plan to get a Stage 1 map as soon as I'm allowed to leave the house which I guess may also help, if my experience of remapping the TT was anything to go by.

Anyone got any general advice for a first time 2 Series owner?

You want to make more noise huh? I always wonder what goes through the minds of people like you, if at all anything remotely valuable. No consideration for your neighbours and how your noise makes them feel and what they have to go through to put up with it. What impact your noise has on the wider community, the environment and your local area. There are lots of people like you who have, mostly illegally, modified their cars to make more noise. They generally just drive around forcing it upon the rest of us..."hey listen to me and my car...I'm going to do this all the time whether you like it or not. Especially on nice sunny weekends when you're trying to relax and have some peace and quiet!" and you will.
I won't bother typing any words of profanity to describe my feelings on this subject, I live next to a little boy with a boy-racer car which has an illegal exhaust with pipes as big as sewage drain pipes. I wish you would be more considerate and not just think of your own pleasures when they impact a other people. Believe it or not, other people walk this earth too and some of them don't appreciate noise as much as you might.

It all depends on what kind of noise you want, you could go for an open cone or an induction kit, when you have had the map, this would give you a better sound from the engine.

If you are wanting a better exhaust sound, it ultimately depends on what you want, if you want it louder then you could just have one of the silencers removed, if you want a nicer noise, then either an aftermarket exhaust or back box.

If your having a map, you could just get a turbo back exhaust, with a sports cat, this will give you even more power along with a nicer noise, and still be completely legal.

Not sure what makes all of these modified cars illegal that the above poster is mentioning, or why their next door neighbours exhaust is illegal just because it is big.

The topic has probably been done many times over regarding the legality of modified exhausts. Have a look, do some research, ignorance causes problems for many.

As far as I am aware, as long as its below a certain DB and has a Cat attached, and meets the emissions criteria, then its legal.

Putting an MSport exhaust on his car will still be legal as this is a factory fitted option, so will meet all uk legal requirements.

If I were being facetious, if you wanted more power and noise, then why did you not buy a M240i from the beginning?

Forget about more (pleasant) noise from a 4 cylinder turbo engine, while worthwhile gains from a remap can be had

The OP was requesting a legal option. Your two contributions to this thread are irrelevant and somewhat desperate.

I looked at deals on new 228i and M240i and by the time you added the kit that came with the latter to the former there wasn't much in it price wise. Less weight, especially over the front wheels, along with adequate power made the 228i appealing, but they just appeared expensive relative to the M240i.

Fully agree; he's obviously got a bee in his bonnet (or up his arse); either way, the comments were unnecessary & overall a bit sad really

Think you've got issues pal; do you feel you may need to speak to someone about them rather than vent them on here, at someone who's come on to ask for advice, not get lectured by someone who clearly doesn't know what they're talking about, but wants to grip on anyways?! rolleyes

It frustrated me as well. We are on a car enthusiasts site and he is moaning about noise. For me noise is the most enjoyable aspect to driving a car. I understand that some won't like it, but I thought we were all here because we love cars and everything about them. Strange.

Yeah; he's obviously got issues (maybe lived next to some idiot that had stupid cars etc); but now tar-brushes everyone across the board?!

Exhaust/breathing mods are about the first thing you do to any car to get it sounding better and to get better pick-up; so to do that you a 228i as well as a re-map would be simple common sense and it'd never be stupid loud (unless it was a straight piped system) which you'd never get away with over here!

I'm sure the OP will find the info he needs soon enough; just needs to ignore those with 'issues'

We have an idiot around us with a straight piped M5 , who rags the ass of it all the time. Its just unreal and bloody stupid and ear bleedingly loud . He obviously knows the MOT man as with black windows and the exhaust , he hasnt any advisories in the last few years.

On the other hand, wouldnt mind a little more fruitiness from my E86 exhaust . Not much, just a little bit but done properly than bastardise the rear box which still doesnt sound right or look great in being welded back up.

No harm in a little bit more noise.

Quite common now to get the original exhaust modified, have a look at a guy called PCW_exhaustmods on Instagram. He modified the original exhaust on various cars and seems to get really good results.

Yeah; that's knobb'ish, but what can you do... Like you said, if he's a friendly MOT'er, they'll pass it every time

Can you do a back box delete on your Z4 and just add a section of pipe and a tail pipe trim etc?

What about aftermarket boxes; anything from Schmiedmann/SuperSprint/Eisenmann etc? Or a local exhaust place?

Congrats on the car op. I was in a similar position when I got my MK3 Leon, I had wanted to make it louder and faster from the very beginning until it dawned on me that I should've just bought an fr instead...
In the end, the Leon went after 5months ownership and I'm now a proud owner of an E39 540i. Ticks both noise and power increase I've been looking for.
It's currently got an esseinman 2x76mm sport muffler and sounds great. Loud enough to enjoy but not too in your face levels. It's definitely an option as Dan mentioned.

Relax Grandad, there's a lot of distance between a legal M-Sports Exhaust or subtle modification and the tin cans that young morons attach to chavved up Civics and Corsas.

I see there are a few spotty teenage, adolescent little boys here who didn't particularly like what I said so need to have a good dig. Hope you feel better.

Fair point, where any relevant points were made, perhaps I was venting off a bit more than the OP deserved, if indeed he isn't a little chav who wants to tear his car up and down the roads generally asking for an anti-social behaviour order then for that I do apologise to the OP. I take back any undue offence.

I have turned into a bit of a granddad more recently because I do value my peace and quiet and am quite annoyed when it is violated by silly little boys who find pleasure in noisy cars. On the other hand I've been a car enthusiast longer than some of you have had hair on your little bits. Oh and guess what? My car has a sport button that turns the noise into something nice too. I even activate it now and again.

Enjoy your weekends. Stay at home. Save lives. Protect the NHS.
