Hi guys

i have a small leak at the point where the steering column is attached to the rack. It is only a slight leak but now is a good time to get these little annoying

jobs done.Has anyone managed to change this seal with the rack insitu, and can anyone tell me if this is the correct seal.

This is where the leak is coming from.

Looks to be the right part and yes it can be done in situ however it is not an easy job even with a ramp.
Nothing technical just difficult to get at.

Agree with Steve ^ but if your struggling that pinion assembly can be removed and serviced on the bench wink
cleanliness both on removal and assembly is essential however yes done 2 like this because I feared marking the shaft where the seal runs scratchchin not really justified in practice but the cars were not mine and I didnt want to take the chance

I managed to change the seal in-situ recently. Fiddly but not too bad. See the following for pics. It is the older rack but the same seal.

Apologies for thread hijack, but the white dust cover is not present on my car (97 face lift) I've looked at the usual suppliers but cant see one listed. Are they still available? I guess a suitably sized cap/bottle top with a hole punched out for the shaft would be better than nothing Ta

I made my cover out of a shampoo cap and the dimensions were 14mm for the pinion diameter and a diameter of >43mm to clear the casing. Painted it black before fitting to disguise it better.
