Volvo XC60 (previous model)

My current V90 lease goes back in a few weeks and with the current uncertainty thought I would venture into buying used again.
Budget £12k max, auto (preferred) and an SUV type vehicle to make it easy getting in and out (due to ongoing back problems). I do about 12k mileage pa but looking at cars from 2015 ideally. Needs to be big enough for family holidays (mid sized).
I was impressed with the Volvo so I think I’ve narrowed it down to the previous XC60s but wondering if this is a good shout or anything else I should consider over it?
Any thoughts experiences welcomed?

Each anniversary I wonder what to replace it with, but haven't found anything yet.
SE Nav is the model I chose - they had a 'sportier' version ("R Design", faintly bling), but the SE Nav is solid looking enough for me!
Went for the 8-speed auto - find it VERY smooth ....especially with the adaptive cruise control - awesome on a long run (taken to the Alps 3 times), but even round town where there may be limits, it keeps the distance very accurately (in my view) - a great aid to relaxed driving (not a replacement for paying attention, before anyone starts!).
Seats are super comfortable too, & this after about 300k miles in 3 Saab's, known for their seats
We also have the active high beam, which is AMAZING at night - flaps close off for vehicles you follow or coming towards you, leaving the edges still on main beam - hard to stress how much difference it makes on country lanes etc.

I ran a D5 SE Nav and generally extremely happy with it. The only reasons I changed it was the later V60 is narrower for fitting in the garage, has seat cushion extensions and is more economical. The V60 does all of those, but other than those features disappoints in many other areas, so I do wonder whether selling the XC60 really was the right thing to do.
I don't have an XC60 but I have a V60 of the same generation you are looking at. my thoughts in general are mine is an R design with half leather seats, I would not recommend the half leather option on these seats, mine has some nasty splits in the drivers seat bolster on the outside, I did buy it that way with the idea I would get it repaired but didn't bother however I've tried to source a replacement seat on a few occasions and all the ones I see for sale have similar damage which indicates to me it is a poor material rather than user error. I would probably have cloth seats as a preference.
Mine also has had a few electrical issues, mainly the door locks, I've had both driver side locks replaced and the boot handle all due to failing locks so check those on any car you look at as it's about £300 per door to repair.
The final issue I have had, although it has mysteriously gone again recently is the BLIS system which was throwing an error over the winter on almost a daily basis but since the weather has improved it has been fine again, some searches online suggested a new wing mirror was required but the costs were silly especially considering it happened on both sides at different times so I just left it.

BTW, & FWIW - when I got mine, there were no D4 auto's about (new engine, new gearbox).
I test drove an older auto AWD model.....and it felt very "agricultural" to me, not at all smooth.
I had read that elsewhere, and had also read that the 8-spd was like chalk & cheese, so took an utter punt on it being "great 'cos most newer autos of that style got decent reviews" - wasn't disappointed!
Mind you....checking your forum name, surely the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the motor for you?
I test drove an older auto AWD model.....and it felt very "agricultural" to me, not at all smooth.

Strange, I swapped my XC60 D5 for a V60 D5 and found the V60 to be better in pretty much every respect..Build quality on the (Belgium made) XC60 was poor, lots of rattles, leaking windscreen etc.
Had one for 18 months 2.4 D5 Se-Lux with 205bhp manual and 4wd
Seats were fantasic, good to drive and enough poke to surprise you if you set of too sharp have wafted for 2 hours

Unfortunately my experience has been the reverse, the XC60 was in fine fettle after a few years and a reliable, comforting companion over long distances, although looking at the fuel consumption in high winds wasn't good. The V60 had a complete shutdown due to electrical brain meltdown after 70 miles and lots of bits not right, currently the rear wheel arch extensions are parting company with the body (new in October). I also find the touchscreen interface and particularly the Sat Nav big steps backwards.
Although the 8 speed box is better than the 6 speed, I do miss the sound and response of the 5 cylinder engine.

Alternate to the XC60 are these, they're reliable very well spec'd & will fulfill your needs to the same level as the Volvo but finding one is the harder thing.

We had an early 2009 2.4d drivE, 6 speed manual, 2wd, S spec, so cloth seats, no nav but did have heated seats, dab etc.
In the 5 years, and 60k we had it, the only issues were the steering lock got stuck on so needed recovery, and the windscreen leaked round the top of the seal (replaced under insurance as developed a crack).
Very capable family car, torquey engine, comfortable cruising, great driving position and seats. I thoroughly recommend one.
I stupidly traded it in against a v8 range rover......silly boy

Sold my 2.0 D4 FWD 8 speed auto just before the lockdown. It was an R Design Lux Nav in Electric Silver.
Great car, owned it 2 years. Bought at 4 years old with 42k and sold with 69k on. Bar an issue with the fuel filter which should have been changed on sale by Volvo, it was 100% reliable. Took it to the Italian Lakes one summer, it makes a great cruiser. The R Design electric seats are a must for me, they are so comfortable, as is the pano roof and power boot lid. It is also eu6, if that is important to you.
Just check the EGR upgrade has been done.
Only sold as have gone electric with a company lease car otherwise it was a keeper.
Stick some Michelin Cross Climates on it to top it off
