Had the opportunity to do some essential work today and took my Chimaera 450 out to blow away the cobwebs.

On my way home I got chased down by a Tesla Model S, good old Chim held her own and eeked out a bit of a lead getting up to my speed limit. Chim sounded glorious revving up to 6 k. ( god I’ve missed that!). Funny thing is I have no idea how hard the Tesla was trying as I couldn’t hear anything but their tyre noise........ now where is the fun in that.

Don’t you miss the good old days when displacement ruled and TVR’s pretty much blew off everything else!

Stay safe everyone, observe the lockdown and thrash the whatsits out of your most cherished when you’re finally freed from all this *£#&!

Sorry to disappoint you Macbags,

Tesla driver probably didn't even warm up the motor(s) and battery...

Had a ride in a Model X, long range dual motor version, the only way my Griffith would beat it is in range... It's not often you can say that with a 5000 cc V8...

And before the pedants start putting finger to keyboard, I'm talking about the practical range, 80% charge down to 20% charge. Something they don't like to mention in the adverts.

The point was trying to make ........ where is the fun in being wafted around at ridiculous speed and not having the accompanying sound track.

You’re probably right in suggesting the Tesla wasn’t trying......I on the other hand was giving it everything and it sounded bloody marvellous. Dispite the technical genius of the Tesla (and best part of £60-£70k price difference) I know which car I prefer and I definitely know who was having more fun!

I agree, there's no emotion or experience in going fast without feeling. they're joyless IMO from the ones I've been in.

basically just a fast golf buggy, senses are dead.

I spent a day driving the electric jag and loved it. The acceleration was far better than the Griff, and that is what made it fun.
Yes, I love the noise my pre-cat makes, but I would be very happy to own an I-pace or a Tesla and would probably enjoy it just as much. Obviously it’s not the same, it’s the other end of the motoring spectrum, but it would still be fun.

I know someone who owns a V8 Vantage and Tesla. The vast majority of his mileage is in the Tesla and that isn’t only economics, he prefers driving it. And this is someone who has owned a few Griffs and plenty of Lotus’s in the past.

I raced one at Shajeapear race way
He casualy pulled up at the side of me ,he had a trendy roof rack on for his bikes .

He took off very fast and got three car lengths in front.

I just beat him with a time of 12. 3 seconds .
His car seemed to loose it at the end .
I have a 360hp motor .

I think is car was over 500hp with no gear changes required .

My best time is 12 003 so with some decent tyres it would get into the 11s .

I guess it was one of the smaller battery versions.

There are a few versions with different power outputs. The link I quoted was for the heaviest model s (largest battery), and that’s 825hp (and the quarter in the 10s). They’re up to 2300kg I believe.

The non-performance version (long range) is 350kw (470hp ish). Maybe it was one of those, or a less powerful older version?
.

It also has an unfair advantage as the Tesla has 2 motors vs your one.
Just a thought but maybe Tesla are like TVR with overinflated power figures and selected press cars rigged for high performance. laugh

Probably more likely on auto pilot hehe

Ive had 3 x chims, 4.0, 5.0 and tuned 5.0 sub 10 sec > 100, nitron etc etc

Have driven p85 & 100 and Even the p85 would disappear before the lazy v8 moved 1k rpm, christ, even our ipace would kill a 5.0. out on the road its not about the numbers on paper, its instant access to its top bhp at any speed at any moment.

Dont get me wrong, i absolutely Love the chim and might add another shortly, maybe a griff.. but things have moved on, you’d need at least 600hp + to stay with a well driven high end ev, i have a 650hp merc and off peak power zones (400hp ish?) it lives with the ipace equally on the twisties 40-100 but a p85 Model S is a fair bit quicker than the ipace, a P100 is new world quick.

I have no doubt electric cars are the way forward with massive amounts of torque on tap to launch you into the stratosphere but I have been looking online for “real world” videos of a iPace or Tesla out on a UK track day. I can see there’s lots of one off, promotional or blog type videos but apart from finding one where he was passing VW golfs and Renault Clio’s with ease I couldn’t find any videos of Tesla’s doing 3-4 hot laps against some decent competition. After being around for a few years why would there not be any or many of these type videos? No charging facilities at the tracks?

They are quick upto 80ish but then the back EMF really starts to kick in.

A mate of mine has 3 Teslas, X, S and 3, all P100 with all the performance extras and all are blistering off the line but slower accelerating at higher speeds.

All of the electric vehicles I have encounter on the roads during my travels seem to be driven with range management focus rather than keeping up with general flow or making progress.

Have also visited a lot of car shows and cannot recall seeing an electric vehicle attending. The Formula E series of racing fans seem to be very different from the general motor sport fan which I love to hang out with.

Conclusion IMHO is that generally the type of person who owns and operates an electric vehicle has no interest in cars or motorsport, would probably not be on this forum and would probably choose their vehicle like purchasing the latest I phone and wants to put the responsibility of their CO2 emissions onto a third party.

Hmmm. Sweeping statements indeed.

I drive my electric vehicle in a spirited manner when safe to do so, and much quicker point to point than I ever managed in any of my TVRs

Surely that would depend n how much (overhyped) battery power it had left.
