One job offer and offer of an interview-what to do?
Discussion
I've found myself in a fortunate and odd position.
I applied for 2 positions at the start of March. One is for a more senior positon where I'd stay in my current team. The salary is 6k more than my current role rising to 10k after 12 months. I'd have no direct reports and it's a decent pay bump for taking on no more responsibility, same location (short commute). The other is 12K starting above my current salary raing to 16k after 12 months. It includes managing a team with direct reports and being involved with larger/more prestigious projects. (same location but some travel).
For the former the guy who is recruting for the role has been really proactive in carrying out interviews despite COVID-19 hitting. And I've been offered the position. I hadn't heard anything on the other position, so I chased this up. I was told I'd made the short list for interviews and these would be arranged. I had confirmation today that the interviews with happen on the 30th of this month. I've had a chat with the guy who offered me the first position, he's keen to get me started and I told him I'd applied for the other role at the same time and appreicated he'd proactivity and I'd like to ideally go through the interview and find the outcome of that to make an informed decesion.
I've considered withdrawing my application on the the more senior position, on a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush approach. It's more of a natural progression, get more experience then the next time a management role comes up I can go for it (no garantee of when I'm being lined up to replace my boss when he retires in 4/5 years time). Of course there's no garantee I'd get more senior role, I've supervisory but no management experience, also if I go for the interview and I'm unsuccessful it's kind of like the other role I've been offered is second best in the guy who's hiring eyes.

One thing to bear in mind is that arranging an interview is one thing, getting a decision out of that, the decision approved and signed off and an offer made can take a long time, longer than expected and can sometimes, even more likely nowadays, cease completely (recruitment freeze, internal restructuring, etc.),Some may question the morals or ethics, but you could accept the existing offer and continue pursuing the other and depending on the outcome, find yourself with a new dilemma or things decided for you.

The other role is for the same company, it to replace someone who is waiting to be realeased for the other role so I'd be expecting a relatively quick answer and I don't expect the role to to dissapear. I take your second point, I suppose I have some morals as I don't want to pi@s someone off too much that I could end up reproting too if I'm not sucessful with the other role. Ah...both jobs within the same company, in that case no, you wouldn't want to accept the first and then see how the second panned out. If you told the guy who offered the first role you'd like to wait and see about the other role, what was the response? If you can wait it out, I'd do that. If you don't get the more senior role, so what? If you're being considered for it that's a good thing, but if ultimately you are deemed to not have enough experience yet, that doesn't make the first offer 'second best', it makes it the right level to gain the experience.
Alternatively, if time is a pressure and If both roles come under the same person higher up, I'd perhaps go see that person and explain or go see HR. The internal merry-go-round is more flexible than if you're on the outside trying to get in and it's generally in company's interests to give people roles appropriate to their ability and potential.

Cheers the-the guy hiring was pretty good about it as the other role is better paid but said he'd be gutted if I didn't take it up. I can understand from his point of view the effort to interview etc I expect they will have interviewed others and have a reserve.
Ultimately the head of the department is the same for both for both roles but is very new to that role themselves and came in externally. I just wish they'd got their finger out on the other role. Applied for at the same time but interviews will be 6 weeks apart if I go ahead.

There are all sorts of issues at play here. One is about your own ambition and honest appraisal of your competency. If you’re really good and really ambitious, going for the less senior role would only irk you, particularly if someone whom you think is less capable than you goes on to bag the more senior role.
If however you’re not overly ambitious or have some development to do before you’re really ready for the more senior role, then take the current offer.
Good luck!

Cheers. As an update I've decided to take the role I have been offered and withdraw my application agaisnt the other. I managed to contact someone who's been on a career break who has been invovled in that area and I really value and trust their opinion and have put me off the other role following that conversation! Plenty of years ahead of me to move into a managment role, espeically when the kids are older and more self sufficent. If however you’re not overly ambitious or have some development to do before you’re really ready for the more senior role, then take the current offer.
