Help! What have I done to my Cayman 987.1
Discussion
Hi all,
In need of some help please!
As we've all got a bit more time on our hands with lock down, I thought I'd buy a borescope to have a look inside my engine. Pleased to report all looked well, but...
When I put everything back together my 2006 Cayman S manual won't start! Video below showing what happens but in summary it: makes a clicking sound, gives a PASM failure alert, gives PSM failure alert and the driver side window starts going down! What on earth have I done!

To be really clear in what I did, I...
1. Jacked up the car, removed the passenger side rear wheel and two internal wheel arch covers.
2. Unplugged the coil packs on cylinders 5 & 6
3. Unscrewed the coil packs on 5 & 6 and removed them
4. Unscrewed the spark plugs, had a peer inside with my camera
5 I then realised pistons 5 & 6 had come to rest near the end of the cylinder so I couldn't see much of the cylinder wall which was what I wanted to look at, so i put everything together and went to start the engine. At this point it turned over a few times but didn't start (it normally starts first time every time) but I didn't think much of it.
6 I then took coil packs and spark plugs out of 5 & 6 to have another look now the pistons had moved.
7 Then I put it all back together and am now stuck with it not starting as shown in the video
Any help is very much appreciated!!
Thanks in advance,
Jon

I am no expert mechanic, but.......
I'd be checking that nothing is "earthing" to the engine having had electrical connections off - checking I haven't pinched anything in putting stuff back together. Check everything including the coilpacks to make sure there can be no grounding anywhere to the block.
Then, after checking all this, and because the engine doesn't turn over at all, and you get clicking instead of the starter motor going, I'd check the battery as strange things happen when the charge in the battery is low. Personally, I would do this by going through a jump start procedure off another car with some jump leads.
If the battery is very low, or has been off, you will get some error messages initially on the dash that will simply disappear when you drive it - I think from memory these are PASM related and similar.
I'm no expert, but this is the approach I would take.

Thanks for the advice both. Just to update that I've just tried it again and am getting even more warning lights happening now. Air bag system warning and ABS system warning!
Also, as it's now sark I've noticed that when I try and start it, with every click I hear there is also a flash of the headlights! Totally bizarre!

These cars do some weird stuff when the battery is low - really wierd. Hook up some jump leads from another car and try to start it. Likely the car has been stood for a while before today, you worked on it with the bonnet open and the inside light on for quite some time, plus cranked it over a bit and basically ran the battery down. Assuming it starts, the remaining error messages will disappear within a few hundred yards of driving.
Hi all,
Thanks for the advice. Just to update this thread incase it helps anyone else... it was indeed a dead battery. Must have drained it whilst working on the car with the door open.
I have just jumped it from my wife's car and all is fine again! Phew! Going to put the battery on charge now.
Thanks again all,
Jon
