Fiesta ST-2 vs 208 GTi By Peugeot Sport
Discussion
I am looking for a new hot hatch and I am curious on people’s opinions. I have narrowed it down to either a Peaugeot 208 GTi By Peugeot Sport edition or a Fiesta ST-2. The 3rd contender was a Vauxhall VXR Clubsport; but I have decided against it as don’t like the looks.
It should be noted that I work from home; have a LR for family duties and long journeys, and tend to have a super car in the garage (last two a Ferrari and 911 Turbo) for when desired. I am purely after a fun b-road blaster in manual for the odd days use. Plus also as a run around when its not suitable to use the more expensive car. I have previously had Renault Sport Clio 182s and a 200.

I have found two higher mileage cars of each which I think represent good value for the money.
Firstly is the Fiesta ST-2; it’s an early 2013 car on 74k miles. It is a local garage to me where I know of the owner and trust it would be a straight car but would only have a basic 2nd hand car warranty. It’s had 2 owners and has a full Ford service history.

Secondly there is the 208 GTi By Peugeot Sport edition; it’s a 2016 car on 62k miles. It’s a Peugeot main dealer so comes with a proper approved used warranty.

It is well know the fiesta ST is a great car although the facelift after 2015 rides better. I don’t want to stretch to £12k for a good ST200 and the post 15 cars are not worth the £2-3k premium for what it’s intended use is. I am only drawn to the Fiesta as it’s cheap and I had a white ST when I was 19. I also like to mess around with cars a bit and there are a ton of aftermarket parts available.
The fact is the ST is well known for being a great car; and it’s in that that the problem lies. There were over 37,000 of them registered in the UK so pretty much come across them daily. There were only 442 208 Gti BPS registered making them very rare!
The GTi has a much higher spec with LSD, Brembo brakes and some gorgeous bucket seats. It also has more kit than the Fiesta and is obviously 3 years newer. However it’s high mileage and was no doubt a lease car for someone with a big commute! At the grand old age of 31, I am also conscious that the ST is a ‘young’ persons car in general, perhaps the GTi is a little more mature and almost has a more ‘classy’ appearance especially in its Metallic Rioja Red.
The big question is; is the 208 worth the extra over the Fiesta. Paying a premium for the extra kit, rarity factor and the fact it’s approved used. I would only put about 2000 miles on it a year.

I'd have the Peugeot - proper LSD and better looks would take it, secondary consideration would be that you won't see one every day. The ST is a great car but a bit too firm for my tastes.
See a lot of people saying the 208 BPS is a lot firmer than the fiesta? The non BPS isn’t.You can’t go wrong with either one to be honest! probably about the two best hot-hatches of that generation.
The VXR Clubsport, especially the interior is feeling it’s age now. Cracking drive though, similar setup to the 208’s. But the Springs are prone to snapping and chances are replaced with normal Springs that ruin the ride height (sits higher) and spoil the handling.
Have you looked the Corsa E ? 2015 onwards ? much better interior and can get the Performance Pack with includes retuned Koni Damper, LSD and 4-Pot Brembos.

The Fiesta is firm, my son has one and I have nicked it occasionally, his was better when we swapped it onto Mountune springs.
Having used it, it comes alive down country roads, makes my M135i feel clueless, woolly and overpowered, it gets better the faster you go, round town the ride, seats and manual box annoy me pretty quickly but they really do shine when hustled. It has enough power but could cope with lots more, feels like it runs out of steam fairly quickly on more open roads but his hasnt been modified for additional power.
Not experienced the Peugeot and believe its pretty good, but I would get the Ford, if just for the parts availability and the ability to bump the power to over 300 bhp quite easily, though I think another 50 bhp would do the trick, maybe with an LSD, a poster called Kaveney has a very modified one in Readers Rides that he tracks, it looks very capable.

I haven’t really looked at the newer version, assumed to get one with the right bits will push budget over £10k and at that level I’d take a ST200 I think. The VXR Clubsport, especially the interior is feeling it’s age now. The BPS 208 is stiffer & is a very good car, the ST is the better steer & a set of Mountune springs calms the ride down day to day but gives you a better B road car too.
You could get these with the change as well as an LSD.
I have always found when changing to aftermarket springs on past vehicles that the ride becomes more bouncy; is this not the case on the Mountunes? You could get these with the change as well as an LSD.

Mountune springs will definitely help the ride on a 13 plate Fiesta.
Despite having a modified ST myself, and loving it, I'd be tempted by the Pug in your situation - I've not driven one but by all accounts the Peugeot Sport one is at least as good to drive as the ST and is something a little different from the norm.
That said - there is a huge choice of tuning options for the Fiesta if that's your thing.

No it's not the case & I've always found it depends on what suspension you choose but the Mountune set up is good at calming things down.Edited by Hot Hatch Hunter on Sunday 19th April 19:22

No - standard uses linear springs, the Mountune are progressive.Edited by Hot Hatch Hunter on Sunday 19th April 19:22
I’d recommend the ST - love mine. Planning to sell it for a Giulia Veloce after all this unfortunately, do too many motorway miles now.
I leased a 208gti for 2 years as we needed something to drive from Telford to Cricceth every 3 weeks. It was great at nipping past anything i happened to encounter but was noisy and harsh (not that i expected anything different). I'm 188cm tall and there were no issues on the inside and i actually liked the small steering wheel and the dials being above the wheel rather than through it.
