Is anyone else keeping the convertible (or putting the roof down) off limits, even for essential journeys?

I just feel like i would be making a target of myself looking like i must be out for a cruise rather than a shopping trip!

I'll drive the MX5 with the roof down if I want to. Do you feel guilty about opening a window on a tin top?

Nothing wrong with roof down to Sainsbury's.

If im using the car for an essential journey why would it matter?

Worse case scenario you get pulled over, you courteously explain your reason for the drive, you both go about about your business.

Not another one.

Nobody looks at you, you're not special, nobody gives two hoots what you're driving. This is a period of time when your usual primping and preening "look at me" behaviour will draw even fewer moths to the flame than you imagine it usually does.

Shall I start some more threads on the same subject, maybe one for each individual paint colour, one for each marque, one for estates, one for cheap st japanese two seaters, one for slow as fook, rattly, old german minibuses and converted delivery vans etc etc ad nauseam?

Exactly. Having the roof down doesn't make a journey less essential.

I took my Seven to Morrisons the other day. Nobody cared. Nobody noticed.

The only problem with open top cars is where do you stick your parking ticket?

There is no such thing as an essential journey. Perhaps addressing that misconception is a better place to start such a train of thought.

I have always used the TVR for essential shopping trips.
Before the lockdown I used to drive 200 miles* to get some black pepper.
Then 200 miles back home to sprinkle on my steak.

And you're only allowed the roof up if the storm's got a name. That's the Law.

* Note: Obviously, as a responsible citizen, to help the NHS and save lives, I observe the Government's guidelines and now limit my radius of travel to the local shop only:

Looks like you picked a bad day to quit sniffing glue. frown

I think the pressure is starting to get to you. Perhaps you should get out more?

Perhaps the OP fears that members of the knees-bent-running-about lockdown brigade are out to get him? They might mass on an overpass to cough at him.

Can't please all of the people all of the time, but it's nice when I do.

All this talk of open top driving makes me want to push my Seven out and go for a mindless spin - but I won't.

I saw a guy out the other day and thought “what an absolute show off, tosser!”
Mainly because mine is off the road at the moment with a badly leaking power steering pump and I can’t go out in itfrown!

I got pulled over on Friday at a police checkpoint - I was driving a convertible, but as it was raining I had the roof up. The policeman asked me if my journey was essential, and I said I was going to the supermarket - which I was. That was it - no more questions and no attempt to verify my "story". I suppose all they are doing is making people think twice - which appears to be mostly working.
