I was just thinking, are the newer aluminium racks a like for like replacement for the older steel tube variety? In other words, if/when my steel tube rack dies or can't be refurbished anymore, can a aluminium one simply be fitted to the existing chassis holes etc?

Yes, the bolt holes are the same. I have had both fitted to my car, one at a time of course, and they are interchangeable.
I have a Kiley Clinton refurbed steel rack for sale by the way with only 100 miles since.
