Hello all

In the market for my first ever Porsche and have narrowed it down to
Boxster 987s black edition 2011
Boxster 981s 2013

Hard to find much info on the black edition but I understand it’s highly specd and that little higher performance wise. I’ve read quite a bit saying prefer the older 987 models but I’m always drawn to the newer car. I won’t go into financial details as I don’t want that to be the final choice but if anyone has owned or knows much about the black edition that would be useful. I am looking to avoid much depreciation. I know a 911 would make more sense but starting with a Boxster has already been decided. Thanks all in advance any help much appreciated
Jason

They’re quite different to drive, and the only answer to this question is: test drive both, then buy the one you like most.

I don’t think you’d be disappointed by either, but it really is down to which one you enjoy most.

No chance, they really fecked up the 981’s steering, 987 much more authentic in my view... 987 is a much better driver’s car.

Ymmv etc,

Ymmv etc,
I'd go older, so I got a proper cable connection with the throttle rather than drive by wire. But that means pre-facelift 986 - hydraulic steering, cable throttle and the only driver aid is ABS. No traction or stability control.

Having owned a 987 and currently a 981, I'd say the 987 if you value the driving experience and the 981 if you value the tech.

As for the Black Edition, I suggest getting very familiar with the options list on these cars. The special editions tend to have a bunch of options included as standard but they are actually not as well spec'd as some "standard" cars without the premium price that the special editions attract.

As for the 911 making more sense, you'll find lots of people, me included, who would disagree, irrespective of budget.

We owned a 987 for three years and have now had a 981 for three years and I prefer the 981. Personally I don't think there is that much difference in the feel. On the other hand the finish of the 981 is significantly better than the 987. Incidentally, are you intending to keep yours garaged or under a car port? Both of ours have leaked into the footwells (resulting in knackered electrics and soggy carpets) because the drains get blocked and are a swine to clear out. On the 987 you can just about see them but on our 981 the service chap at my Porsche centre couldn't even show me how to clear them.

Ymmv etc,
I agree with this. I had a 987 manual for a few months, it was ok so I decided to chop my C Class Coupe in with it to get a 981PDK. I wasn't doing the long work journeys any more to justify the Merc but I still wanted an automatic as I knew I'd often be stuck in local traffic. The 981 has a better interior but the steering feels dull and heavy. I believe the 981 is marginally bigger than the 987 but for some reason it seems much bigger to me. The 981 is a good motor for long distance trips but I'd be happy to have the 987 back.

Can’t agree with the last sentence.
Nice examples of the earlier cars can still feel crisp and sharp and deliver a lot of everyday fun and quality.
In the meantime most cars, inc Porsches, have grown bigger heavier, more tech complex .....
Having said that, I would definitely stretch to the 981.
I think the Boxster and Cayman came of age with the 981. It feels more grown up, looks much better, and closed the gap with the 911.
I never found the steering an issue, and the key ingredient - the normally aspirated flat-6 - is still at its mid-engined heart.

When I was looking , I found the specs were all over the place, very unusual to find 2 cars the same. Just figure out what options you want/ are important and go from there.

I wanted pdk and didn’t want silver with black interior, that took a chunk of the market out of the search!

I owned a 987 Boxster S Sport Edition for about 3 years (similar to Black edition in terms of extras, but with a bit of a body kit), I really enjoyed it but I traded that in for a 2013 981 Boxster S. IMHO the newer car is a phenomenal leap forward on so many levels, and whilst the older car will feel more "analogue" (which may be important to some people) the 981 is just a masterpiece.

Try them both and see which one you like, but personally I couldn't imagine going back to a 987.

981, if your tall it’s so much easier to find a comfortable driving position.

I have a 981S Boxster currently and had a 997 C2S new in 2007. No comparison for me and I would have the Boxster every time, for its handling, fun factor and noise.

Is it a 987.2 BE manual if so that would be my choice no contest!same 330hp engine ,wheels , Ali doors as CR but cheaper. Comes with pasm which as the parts come up for replacement could always be upgraded to a better passive system

That’s the good thing, drive a 987.2 1st then you will hate the general feel on the modern cars, esp the 981 eps st.

Older model wins hands down :-)
