Change in career due to CV19
Discussion
So, I'm a product designer/design engineer, with about 13 years experience in retail display design.
Unsurprisingly my company, and the wider retail display industry, is being hit pretty hard by CV19... I have already taken a 20% pay cut, and about 1/3rd of the company has been furloughed.
This has me thinking about contigency plans if/when the ship sinks... we haven't been given much information, but I wouldn't be surprised if things go belly up in a month or two, so I'm considering my options if the worst happens, as we will probably be given little to no notice.
I could stay in my industry, where I can command the highest salary, and am management level.. however job opportunities in my sector are bound to be thin on the ground... ballpark for this is £40-50k salary in London/home counties.
Or I could change careers... ideally to something CV19 and recession proof, but the rub would be that I couldn't really afford too much of a dip in salary, maybe £35k starting if that rose to £40+ after a year. Is this totally unrealistic? I can't really support my family on a wage in the £20s, and my wife earns very little in the NHS.... we live in Hertfordshire and the cost of living isn't exactly cheap
I'm more or less open to anything really... but haven't considered a career change up to now, as things were going pretty well.
Any thoughts or input, or viable career change ideas? I have enough savings to last me 6 months unemployed and still pay the bills, but they are there to buy our first home so i would rather not touch them at all.
