Remember a few years ago a lot of PHers bought the HP Proliant Microserver?

I was one of us, and its still working fine, running Windows Home Server 2011, which is now out of support.

I've run out of space, and have a new WD Red drive appearing at some point today. I'm just thinking before I install it, should I be thinking of migrating the server to a new software platform? It is used mainly for streaming media around the house, and also for Win 10 PC backups. These haven't been working for a while looking at the logs! Presume due to disc space.

Any suggestions? Don't want to add the disc and then realise I can migrate the data...

Microsoft sell 'Server 2019', but not sure this is appropriate / compatible with the Proliant. Help gratefully received!

From a business point of view the majority of people purchasing the Microserver look at Server Essentials

There are compatibility issues with the AMD based Microserver Gen 10 though and the new Gen 10 Plus is proving very popular with the Intel chip

Home Server was a great product, it's a shame that they abandoned it.

I moved over to https://www.openmediavault.org/

Does everything that I need but it took a lot of youtube videos to get it running right.

It also requires a drive just to boot from which took me a while to figure out. Data is actually stored on additional disks.

I think that Server 19 is for office automation rather than media. It'll store your files etc.

Have a look at xpenology - a port of Synology's DSM. I had it running on an old HP server with no problems until I bought a synology unit.

Thanks all. In the end I decided to just add the new HDD and all seems good

I'd forgotten quite how nicely the Microservers are built - the thing weighs a ton! Also has lots of spare screws for the HDD caddies as well as an allen key to tighten them up stored on the front door. Gave it a good hoover to remove the several years of dust. It sits high up on top of a cabinet in the study, but was still filthy inside
