iPhone IOS mail hack

Hello from Germany,
I have no Apple phone but have just heard a warning from the federal german cyberscurity office ( on radio ).
Seems that the built-in mail program was hacked for years, reports on WSJ and Forbes seem to confirm that,

Seems only victims of high importance were hacked, but since there are some powerfully built directors on here....
The german report stated that the user did not even have to open the mail ( BBC reports otherwise ),
just recieving it would mean the system is corrupted and open to attacks.
