Chaps, I hope all are doing OK.
I have a DMS remapped 2017 440i and am not loving the auto box, seems quite slow witted and not a patch on the PDK, for example. Given how popular and highly rated this gearbox is, is there a common consensus in which product offers the best remaps, and should this be done at a specialist, or are the 'home installations' something to be avoided? In 30+ years of driving it's my first ever auto so maybe it is me!

The changes & performance are better in Sport mode, so I assume even there you're finding it slow? You can also have the gearbox adaptations reset, so it relearns change characteristics based on your driving. Having said that, I reset the adaptations on mine - possibly the first time it was done - after 135,000 miles, and I didn't like it at first. Very jerky, almost violent changes. It quickly settled down again though as it relearnt my style of driving.
Try https://www.evolveautomotive.com/ as they offer a gearbox remap for the ZF 8HP.

Thank you; the speed of the actual changes is fine for me in Sport mode (road use only) - it sometimes doesn't shift when I want it to, sometimes stays in much higher gear than I'd want went pressing on. I don't want to use the paddles all of the time. it has 432bhp now so perhaps the box needs recalibration
Ok. Have a look specifically here, it might be of interest... https://www.evolveautomotive.com/zf8-gearbox-remap...

Buy XHP software. You install it yourself. I have a DMS remapped 2017 440i and am not loving the auto box, seems quite slow witted and not a patch on the PDK, for example. I’d fully recommend XHP as I have it on my stage 1 M135i.
Download the app on google play or iOS, buy the map pack and with an Ethernet cable you can upload either their generic settings or you can adjust them to make your own. Shift points/speeds/redline. There are plenty of other settings/adjustments you can make and when they do it automatically checks it against their database to ensure what changes you have made are safe.
I’m happy with their generic settings which basically is comfort is a touch smoother and slower whilst sport and sports+ are very similar To the DCT changes I had on my E92 M3.

There is a noticeable difference in calibration of the current ZF boxes Vs the previous ones if you're letting the box do its own thing.
I had a 2013 m135i from new until last year when I replaced with a new m140i. Same gearbox, but where as the m135i was perfectly judged and really sweet, frankly the calibration on the m140i is crap. If you hadn't experienced the previous version you'd prob be quite happy - but if you have.....
I spoke to BMW who told me the settings were changes to meet the new emissions targets etc........ so maybe all you need to do is find a way to revert it back to the old school settings.
Also check with DMS, they do gearbox maps too. My new one will be going back there after my first service is complete.

Don't go to DMS, get the one from XHP. It's really not hard and if you're incapable of plugging a mobile phone into your car and following basic instructions you can find an XHP dealer who will do it for you.
It's a vastly superior piece of software and infinetly customisable.
What kind of difference / improvements does it make in the generic setting? It's a vastly superior piece of software and infinetly customisable.

Crudely explained, there are no changes to EcoPro, comfort changes are made that little bit smoother, sport changes are quicker and there is the option to have the changes in sports plus as quick as they possibly can be. This is what makes the comparison to a DCT for me. If you don’t want these quick changes you can have sports+ changes the same as they are in sports. With the gear-lever pushed left into sports this only changes the shift point - ie what revs it changes up at - shift speed are not affected.
Once you’re in the settings there is the ability to change shift points in any settings, amount of throttle blips on, downshifts, launch control settings and some others.
Prior to these settings being installed it goes through a self verification to ensure its happy the settings are reasonable and it’s not going to brick itself.
Fool proof some would say.

For a full in depth list of what the software does the best place to look would be on the website of XHP given I can't list everything myself.
Everyone here has recommended it, not sure what more we can say :-) Plus it's substantially cheaper than what most places charge.
No idea why you wouldn't just go and download the app now

A question I’m currently asking myself too!For a full in depth list of what the software does the best place to look would be on the website of XHP given I can't list everything myself.

I’d rather get somebody who knows what they’re doing to avoid me f
king it up - but gonna take a look It's very easy.
Plug the cable (or WiFi dongle) in.
Plug in the passengers seatbelt. Shut the doors and turn the interior fans off and lights off.
Takes 5 mins or so. Easy. I'd go with Stage 2 or 3. I have Stage 3 with 2nd gear on launch enabled.
You can find an XHP dealer instead if you prefer. But note with a dealer license any tweaks, updates etc you have to do. Also plenty of DIY guides on Youtube and such like as well as Facebook community pages

Just stumbled across this post. I've seen a bit about the XHP stuff, adverts online etc but never really looked at it too much.
A couple of things that I'd like to change on my ZF box, firstly the shift points, particularly in sport. Is it possible to move these to custom points? An when you move the shifter over to the left, could you set custom s
t points for that too?
Secondly the stupid fake 'thud' when it changes gear in sport+, is it possible to remove that too?
