When the WFH ends and we need to go back to the office I would need a daily shed as I have got a coveted parking spot which is rare and also like to avoid the trains for sometime due to COVID

The commute will be a 14 mile round trip (urban and A roads) and I would like a car with a budget of around £ 750 with manual transmission and a petrol engine,as im tall I dont think Clios or its kind will suit,I was thinking about a VW Golf (2000-2003) or a Ford Focus Mark 1,any suggestions?

Buy the best Focus or Mondeo you can find. I spent £1k a few years back to do a 100 mile a day round trip for a new contract and it did a brilliant job. Easy to fix if they go wrong, parts are peanuts and genuinely nice to drive (unlike the Vauxhall suggestions above). Did 20k in mine in 12 months and only costs were tyres, brake pads, oil and fuel. Then sold it for what I'd paid.

If you want something left field you could consider the Audi A2. Air-con is essential with these though. Test drove one of these when they were new and thought it was lovely, didn't buy it as it was too much money; amazed that they are in shed territory. Audi could give the design a refresh and an electric drivetrain and sell it new.

1.4SE with a/c, history & recent belts. £999.

Completely side with this. There is all sorts of duct tape and cardboard inside mine and frankly you wouldn't be able to tell. Take care of them, and they will go on and on. Mine has just ticked over 113k miles and no major expenses for a few years now (had to replace a CV joint in 2016 but that was the last major expense (of the car's doing anyway....). Very easy to work on if you're in anyway mechanically minded. Or even just able to hold a screwdriver. Seen quite a few Mk1 Focus 2.0 for less than your budget, so finding 1.8s and 1.6s should be a doddle, and this includes the mk2 as well

I reckon that would be an easy flip and make a quick £500 at least.

I remember when these came.out new, they were probably.a.car before their time in many ways. I agree if Audi refreshed it they could sell it now.

At the time one of the sales features was that the owner would never have to open the bonnet and the engine bay was only meant to be accessed by Audi techs.

The usual check bottles, Oil, screen wash etc are.all behind a drop down panel which doubles up as the front grill.

I'd probably buy one if I was in the market forces r a cheap city.car.
