Hi guys

I noticed a 'ticking' type noise coming from the engine, which I can hear relatively clearly on idle. No issues to note otherwise, feels as strong as ever on the trips down to M&S for the food run!

Any ideas, I've got another car so can use that in the interim until I can get it into Porsche to look at - if it's a real problem?

Thoughts on what it might be?

Cheers

No idea - but mine does it too sometimes! Maybe due to lack of use and oil draining away from some moving parts (I’m no mechanic!)
I find it goes once the car has warmed up properly - which isn’t easy at the moment. Mines had two runs to Sainsbury’s in the last 6 weeks...

Yep, what Nick said. I noticed it on my old GTS if it hadn't been used for a while.

An Italian tune up should make it go away wink

Hi all

My 981s developed a 'ticking' noise that was most noticable with windows or roof open and seemed more pronounced initially on the passenger side. It ended up becoming apparent both sides. At 24k miles it went into the OPC. The lead tech wasn't sure what it was so got me a courtesy car and had the car taken in. Long story short, many things were checked and changed prior to dropping the engine. After a few weeks the engine was taken out and stripped down to it's component parts. No fault / cause was found. The OPC ended up ordering a brand new engine with ancillaries. I've since spoken to Porsche and various specialists and it turns out that it is now a known 'feature' of all these engines (in 987, 981 and 911s of the same engine generation). I've actually heard it a lot since. It's just really strange that it was apparently unknown for a decade before mine went in.

When I first heard it, I thought I had kicked up a couple of bits of gravel on top of the metal under tray(s) and they were rustling. You mainly heard as the car took up load up to maybe 1500rpm.

For me (and the new owner), aside from the initial stress, it was a good result (brand new everything at 24,000 miles). For anyone that has the problem now, it is a known thing. It isn't believed to get worse or cause any adverse wear and as such, won't be 'acted upon'. If it sounds like it maybe what you have, happy to discuss further.

Sounds trivial but could just be a leaf in side air intakes being hit by cooling fan. It's happened to me twice and at first I thought the worst but after a drive the leaf is destroyed and no noise

Oh GTS, so you have side grills I think. So unfortunately not my leaf suggestion

No side grilles as standard on a 981 GTS.

+1

It is the oil lifters or the fuel injectors i'm led to believe which is all well and good but I've never had another car do it. I'm relaxed about it now but it was certainly a big stress when I first got my CS.

Just belatedly reporting back that the Italian tune up worked an absolute treat.

The car is running super super sweet at the moment, can’t imagine there’s a much better driving experience anywhere out there with the same balance of comfortable, performance and enjoyment!

Albeit just hovering over the trigger for a 4.0....!!
