SORN & Covid 19
Discussion
My 997 has been on sorn since October. I normally put it back on the road at the beginning of April but I didn’t because of the current circumstances. A month has passed and I’m wondering whether or not to leave it another month or will I get chance to go for a weekend drive without breaking any rules. Im not sure if you are permitted just to go for a drive without good reason... i.e. taking granny a meal.

I would leave it as you can always decide on the day wether to retrospectively tax for the month (even if it’s the last weekend in May!) if you do fancy a drive or to use the car for essential journeys. If the weather turns, you may think it’s not worth having the car taxed to be sat, but if we get a good spell, it may be worth paying the months tax for a drive. I’ve sorn’d a couple of cars and brought a motorcycle back out of SORN to use that for some essential journeys as it seemed to make more sense in tax terms.
Edited as I’ve now forgotten which month we are in!

but if you’re only supposed to drive 300 yards to get some face masks I won’t bother. Mariosbt said:

I’m sure the relatives of the twenty seven thousand people who have died of the virus will understand that you want to take your nice car for a drive.
I will email them all to tell them I am popping out for a loaf & pint of milk. Please explain how driving my car from my drive onto roads, then back to my drive will affect anyone?

I’ve no problems if you are genuinely using your car to get supplies you need, but if you are simply using supplies as an excuse to go out for a drive, then that’s a different matter. We have had two motorcyclists in this area who were doing the latter, only to both end up requiring emergency services. It was a nice sunny day, they had nice bikes, they took the long route to the supermarket and now they are both in hospital. In both cases they could have walked to a local shop.
Anyone who uses a car or bike unnecessarily is simply selfish.
I I don’t really get what you are saying there. We’re we not discussing the use of vehicles and how it could effect spreading the virus? It sounds to me like these motor cyclists were riding too fast... maybe a little exited about getting out. I am talking about driving my car from my property to give the car, which has been stood for months, a decent run and back to the house again. I don’t even get out of the car. Where is the problem?
It seems to me you are being slightly cantankerous here.
It seems to me you are being slightly cantankerous here.So you take you car out...what happens if you break down, or you hit a dog that runs out, or a child that steps on to the road etc etc.....there are a number of things that could happen to you when you take your ‘harmless’ drive that then effect other people.
The advice is clear...the fact you don’t like it isn’t my problem. If you don’t understand, take the time to speak to someone who is currently working in the emergency services or the NHS. There will be plenty of opportunities to go for a drive later in life....

Your first paragraph just like the motorbike thing, could happen at anytime on roads... probably more chance when the roads are busy again
Anyway the car has been out, circa 15 miles. Managed to drop 3 tins of broad beans off at the stepfathers as ordered. Do you always run your life around worst case scenarios. Take a f@ck!ng chill pill Bobby. Those rally’s you follow are very dangerous, especially if you’re spectating on the wrong side of a bend. I seem to remember father & son being killed while watching.. so you take care.
I have a different view as to why you shouldn't go for a joy ride (as in a drive without a proper reason). It's because you have been asked to stay at home unless you have a proper reason to go out. Now pretty much everyone can decide they are a special case, it's just them, what harm can it do? Then you have 60m people not staying at home. So please don't.

Have a lovely selfish time Mario.
The drive had a purpose. I had to take some groceries to my stepfather. It was a case of do I take the old diesel Golf, the VW T5... or do I tax my P&J. The journey was always going to happen. Is your opinion the same for people on pushbikes because you can’t move for them where I live. They will argue it’s exercise. YOU could argue ... but if 60 million got on there bikes. Worse case scenario once again! Anyhow I’ve done nothing wrong. Enjoy your weekend Bert.Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
