Ultimate Bangernomics - MK4 Golf SDI Running on Veg Oil
Discussion
Hey chaps
Just finished making a video about my most recent purchase. Its a £480 VW Golf SDI and its possibly the slowest thing I've ever driven. I'm doing some maintenance work to it next week and trying out running it on used engine oil. If you any of you guys are interested in bangernomics then let me know and I'll keep the thread updated.

Yeah but its essentially just 7 minutes of GoPro dashcam footage of drive through Russia on my old channel. I only just properly started the YouTube thing recently with some friends and I had all of our old footage that got lost unfortunately so there won't be much new on that car or trip.

I'd be interested in a thread. I really want to know how it runs on various types of oil!
15 years ago when cooking oil was cheap I ran my Audi A4 V6 on 75% in summer and 30% in the winter - new oil from supermarket less than 1/4 the cost of diesel. Then the cost rose to near enough match diesel and is still similar. So only economical if you can obtain the oil free of charge. If using used cooking oil then it needs to settle for a month or so to separate out the water. One thing to bare in mind it modern fuel pumps (PD etc.) will not like this fuel without additives.[quote=magpies]
So only economical if you can obtain the oil free of charge.
If you have a car that will run straight veg oil and you don't live too far from a costco then its still very much worthwhile. At the moment its about a 40% cost saving plus you will sometimes come into situations where someone is throwing away a few litres of veg oil, atf, white spirit or hydraulic fluid and you have a car than can run on it. Its like anything though, it all depends on how far you want to take it.

Golf update
I answered all the questions from readers/views and did some maintenance. Bought the cheapest 20l drum of 5w30 oil I could find on ebay so I'm doing a long term test on that.
Here is the link for those interested.

I decided to move on and get a new car. This is the last update on Project Golf and the first of the new project car.
The Golf needed too much work and the fuel savings were not worth the misery of such a slow car. I hope anyone following enjoys.
