Reading Autocad 2007 for dummies on layers

I understand the concept, in fact have used it in the past with transparencies laid one on top etc, Great, as i need 25 or so layers
However the instructions appear to suggest that these layers can be turned on/ff showing just the ones of your choice
To make sure i have got this correct i did layer 0 as a square
selected format->layer ->new layer apply-> ok and drew a circle for layer one
same for layer 2 with a rectangle

All three shapes are showing on the drawing

I then went format-.> layer and selected layer 1 to be turned off. However all three shapes are still showing ( i was expecting the square and rectangle to remain), ditto layer 2 all three showing
Turning of 1 and 2 still shows the three shapes
Now turn off Layer 0 and all three vanish!
Where am i going wrong I am selecting apply and OK in each case or am i selecting the next layer incorrectly

The reason i want to show sep layers is i am drawing a locomotive tender that will be constructed using the tab and slot method prior to soldering and this method will get the tab and slot in the correct locations as silver solder reqs a gap of only 0.1mm gap to penetrate.
once all is confirmed as being in place i can then used the 'pedit' command on each layer so it is ready for sending to be laser cut.

Any thoughts/suggestions

Thanks

That would suggest you have actually drawn all three objects on Layer 0. Don't forget you not only have to create a new layer, you have to make it the current one so that new objects get drawn on that layer. Have a look at the properties of the circle you drew & it will tell you which layer the circle is on.

There are loads of tutorials on Youtube & whilst many of them are for later versions of AutoCad the basic principles are exactly the same for Acad 2007. The menus just might look a bit different.

Jolly good: layers are crucial to CAD work. Learn how to control linetypes colours, weights & the like & your drawings will be much easier to understand. Don't forget the colour you print a layer as doesn't have to be the same as the layer colour.

Layers are life in CAD!

Amount of wasted hours we've had because someone has put everything on Layer 0 or just completely wrong.

Remember to check your layers when copy and pasting too!
