Quinsy - warning

I'm currently recovering from this and have to say it's probably the worst thing I've ever experienced (compounded by the GP refusing to see or treat me).
Started out of the blue last Tuesday when I got up with a sore throat on one side, having been absolutely fine the previous evening - here goes I thought, a cold coming on I thought. Rapidly got worse, then I started to lose the ability to swallow or speak properly - raging headache, ear ache on same side and unable to swallow.
Called the Dr later that day and was informed in a 'matronly' manner that I could not possibly be examined cos CV19. Patronised by the GP and told I had tonsillitis and that I sounded 'alright' (over the phone, even though she does not know my voice anyway) but that she'd prescribe me some penicillin. I told her of my text book symptoms but to no avail.
It got worse to the point that I could not sleep due to being unable to swallow (let alone eat) - I had to 'clear' every 2 minutes into a bowl by the bedside, horrible - half a litre by morning. Laying down and trying to sleep resulted in waking two minutes later gagging due to unswallowed saliva and gunge - like I imgaine waterboarding might be.
This went on for two nights and I was poised to get Mrs LB to take me to A&E as soon as dawn broke when at 4am on the Thursday in a coughing bought trying to clear my airways the bugger burst filling my mouth with something unmentionable. Within less than 15 seconds I was feeling quite a bit better and managed around 2 hours sleep (the first in two days).
Still recovering with just a regular sore throat and headache (dehydration I imagine) but I would not wish to go through that again. Taking penicillin for another week.
So, don't take a sore throat lightly, especially if it's restricted to one side and you begin to struggle with swallowing or eating - get it checked out.
This condition can kill if left unattended and I'm still amazed at how the GP dismissed what was obvious to me.

I feel your pain.
I suffered from this several years ago and it was nasty. Not being able to swallow was a horrible sensation but luckily I managed to see a doctor who quickly diagnosed what it was and warned me I was badly dehydrated.
Mine took a while to clear and caused problems for a little while after but that's now all a distant memory.
Fingers crossed it goes away as quickly as it appeared.

Last Christmas I had what started off heavy cold then I thought tonsillitis as I have had that before. After another day I went to GP with similar as you describe and got sent on to hospital with suspected quinsy, but as with you only after some objection on my part insisting it felt worse.
On further examination it wasn't that but Supraglottitis (no Id never heard of it either) but it completely flattened me I was in hospital for 9 days on drip and missed my kid's first Christmas wife was furious. I'm a healthy 36 year old powerfully built director, never been to hospital before except for sport knocks.
Apparently either of these untreated and you can get a blocked airway in sleep and simply not wake up!

Yeah had this a few years ago went to sleep with an itchy sore throat and then woke up in the middle of the night struggling to breath, felt like my whole throat had closed up and could see this big spot at the back of my mouth.
Went to A&E straight away who put me on an IV which made me feel a lot better, than the next day they drained it with a syringe.
Touch wood it's not come back but heard if you leave it and it bursts it can be lethal if the fluid gets to your lungs.
