Longish story. The car drove home from work fine. Next morning it wouldn't start. No flashing lights or beeping but engine management light was on. I got a customer of mine out to run disgnostics and got about 3 pages of historical faults. All except g28 & g40 were over 5 yesrs old and must have been there before i bought the car, or not.

Anyway i replaced the cam g40 sensor and still no change. So i changed the crank g28 sensor (also changed the dmf and clutch as i had to take the gearbox off to get that sensor off!)

Still no starting but no more codes recorded.

Next i changed the cambelt and water pump as at 5 years it was due and maybe the belt had stretched.

Still nothing. Finally i changed the fuel filter, it was black!!

After all the above i have a non starter and there are no codes stored and engine management light is off.

I'm now stumped. However i was wondering if it is possible to fit the flywheel incorrectly and thus throw the signal going to the g28?

I think your only hope in this situation is to try and have a look at the cam/crank sensor signals to see if they are correct and in sync.

I went back to it this morning and with a fully charclged battery.

It started after a few attempts and idled perfectly. The heater plug light was flashing. The engine ran as sweet as a nut. After my second run around the block it died as i was turning onto the drive. I managed to restart it eventually and got onto the drive. This time the engine management light came on and this time i got a code. P0726 engine speed.

I'm wondering if my battery is dud.

Typical luck of mine, i have a battery tester in work but i furloughed!

Could be if the cranking speed isn’t quite met for the starts. Did you fit a genuine or pattern crank sensor?

Both replacement sensors were genuine parts and the dmf clutch kit is sachs.
